A Masterpiece

Well, after the reading the above reviews I have to say that I was compelled to write a review since I think this exsquisite piece of literature is one of the most moving plays I have ever read. A tale of wrenching and impossible desire, it exposes the danger of the subconscious and within that is a true love story. Arthur Miller has once again brilliantly created a complex and emotionally torturted man in Eddie.

An Intense Question of the Bonds of Family

Arthur Miller often allows the reader to have difficulty identifying with a character, while empathizing with several characters. This is the case in "A View from a Bridge." When the story ends in tragedy, it is no surprise that the reader is made to question some aspect of American society.

In this play, Eddie inherits the duty of raising his niece since the death of his sister. When cousins who are illegal immigrants come to stay with the family, it is a challenge to Eddie's role as father figure. The character and integrity of Rodolpho the younger immigrant is called in to question as he begins a relationship with Eddie's niece Catherine. Is he only marrying her to obtain American citizenship? Is he too much of a free spirit with his singing and dress-making skills? In Eddie's eyes, he certainly not the proper suiter he expected for Catherine. With a wedding on the horizon, Eddie takes his only real option to prevent the marriage. He calls immigration. The final confrontation between Rodolpho and Eddie ends in tragedy, but the character flaws in both men make it difficult to sympathize with either.

The story raises questions of the bonds of family as well as the changing conditions of immigration into America. The fact that the play makes the reader think about social conditions is a reflecion of the quality of the play. It is from the high standard readers hold an Arthur Miller play to.

Problem solving made easy

This book was written by two practicing therapists who have combined to produce a book which provides other therapists with a fund of information which can be easily accessed. The book contains chapters on identifying the problem, whether it is from a sensory [sensory integration based] deficit or a behavior that is learned and reinforced to become habit. It can be read through as a learning experience, but can also then be referred back to as specific difficulties are identified with particular children. The layout is clear and the text concise and accessable. No I am not their agent, just a fan!

Loved this!

I loved this book about a husband and wife making up and finding their way back together. So sweet and very sexy. He was so protective of her. Swoon! I can't wait for Wes's story. I need to go back and reread Jackson and Katie's story now. I have enjoyed every book by this author.

Touching short story but not a Western

This was a touching short story but it wasn't a western. There were no ranches involved and the only cowboy mentioned was a minor nameless character in a less than 90 second scene. There were numerous editing errors and several errors in verb tenses and in subject/verb tense agreement. The love scenes were somewhat lacking in chemistry. There were some details but somehow the heat wasn't very high. Under the circumstances one would have expected more intensity.

The author does exhibit a talent for writing and most of the story flowed well. It could have used more depth and detail to enhance the story. A major plus is the HEA without a cliffhanger. The epilogue was a nice wrap up for the storyline. I like the author's work and hope she doesn't fall into the habit of churning out assembly line short stories instead of developing her talent. I plan on reading more of her work in the future.

To illustrate what he views as an epic wrong, the author probes five tragic encounters--with Aztec, Maya, Inca, Cherokee and Iroquois cultures. Using materials recorded as contemporaneously as possible, from the Incas to Cherokee principal chief Wilma Mankiller, the book follows a trail of treachery, blood and futility. Rather than attempt a comprehensive rendering of the centuries of genocide practiced by those who came in the wake of Columbus, Wright sensibly opts to present a few of the ``highlights.'' The savagery practiced against five major cultures--the Maya, Inca, Aztec, Cherokee, and Iroquois--and their responses appear in three stages, encompassing five hundred years: the initial periods of contact in each case; the hard and bloody struggles of these peoples once the battle was joined; and the modern phase, in which resistance continues along with the resolve to endure. Even with their societies largely destroyed, however, retention of an indigenous identity for the Incan descendants in Peru and their Mayan counterparts in Guatemala, and events such as last year's tense standoff between defiant Iroquois and thousands of Canadian troops can be seen, Wright says, as evidence that a determined native resistance continues. The truth about the original inhabitants of the Americas

Wright's "Stolen Continents" is a seminal classic which replaces Eurocentric mythology with documented observations. The author spent many years tracing the original histories of North and South American natives as they themselves observed and recorded it. This is the material that the descendents of the conquering Europeans and their modern day American cousins were never supposed to see. The murderous adventures of the gold seeking and land grabbing cutthroats is documented. It serves as a shameful monument to men who called themselves Christians, and who violated every basic Christian principle for the sake of gold, land, and enslaving nations. These documents also make it clear why there is so much trouble today with native North and South Americans who resist the ongoing genocide that began five centuries ago. Wright is an indignant and angry writer; which in the context of his discoveries is appropriate. For those wishing to understand what happened in the Americas before Hollywood cowboy and indian movies reinforced all the negative stereotypes of native Americans, Wright's book must be read

Although the material in this book is probably covered in greater detail elsewhere, it is pretty unique that the experiences of indigenous groups as diverse as the Iroquois and Incas, are presented here with equal detail. One learns interesting facts about each of them. While I knew about Manco Inca's revolt and establishing a mini-Inca state in the jungle, I had no idea that this was followed by a sort of "Inca Renaissance," with plays, histories and poems written in Quechua. In addition, the five groups that Wright chose either had their own written language or quickly learned one after European contact (and the Cherokee even had their own newspaper), so this history is genuinely "through Indian eyes." The unifying thread (in addition to the resilience of all 5 groups) is that the colonization of the New World by Europeans was not significantly different that of Africa and Asia- without the disease factor, the Americas might today be wholly governed by their original inhabitants.

About the Author
JOHN ABERTH lives in Roxbury, Vermont, and teaches history at Vermont's Castleton State College, where he formerly served as associate academic dean. He has taught history at a number of other institutions, including Middlebury College, the University of Vermont, St. Michael's College, the University of Nebraska, and Norwich University. He received his Ph.D. in Medieval History from Cambridge University in England and has published several books, including Churchmen in the Age of Edward III: The Case of Bishop Thomas de Lisle (1996), From the Brink of the Apocalypse: Confronting Famine, War, Plague and Death (2000), and A Knight at the Movies: Medieval History on Film (2003).

Nicely composed first source historical documents. Excellent source material for the historian, easily accessed and well researched. The extensive bibliography only adds weight to the validity of sources. Also provides interesting insight into the cultural and social events and reactions surrounding the Black Plague.

The Very Best

The Very Best beginner's book on JavaScript, for adults (and children). Don't be fooled by the title about kids. This is solid for anyone at any age.
It shows clearly how JavaScript is laid out from the ABCs of the language. I went through several books. This is the best. Most books are confusing to beginners even if you know HTML and CSS. The reason being that the writers know too much code and cannot put themselves on a pee wee level to teach it. Hence if you are not advanced somewhat, those books merely add to your confusion and lack of understanding. This starts at the very bottom.

As far as this being for kids. That I think is true if such kids have programmer parents or are geniuses in their own right. Otherwise this book is really for adults who are studying JavaScript on their own and need a tutorial which begins at the very start of JavaScript development and gradually moves upwards. And yes, this is for dummies like myself who are adults.
