This volume presents the major works of five poets―George Herbert, Richard Crashaw, Andrew Marvell, Henry Vaughan, and Thomas Traherne.
While most of the selections fall under the heading of religious poetry, the important secular verse of Marvell and Crashaw is included.
Eighty poems by Herbert have been selected from The Temple, and two early poems from Isaak Walton's Lives are also included. Crashaw is represented by sixteen poems from Steps to the Temple, Delights of the Muses, and Carmen Deo Nostro; Marvell, by eighteen selections from Miscellaneous Poems; Vaughan, by forty-five poems from Silex Scintillans, Parts I and II; and Traherne, by twelve poems from the Dobell Folio, The Third Century, and the Burney Manuscript.
All of the texts have been freshly edited, and spelling has been modernized. Textual Notes specify the procedures followed and give reasons for certain new readings. The poems are fully annotated in order to clarify unfamiliar allusions and images.
A broad range of critical viewpoints is represented in essays by Samuel Taylor Coleridge, Aldous Huxley, W. H. Auden, T. S. Eliot, Anthony Low, L. C. Knights, E. B. Greenwood, Joseph H. About the Author
Mario A. Di Cesare�is Professor of English and Comparative Literature at the State University of New York at Binghamton. He received his Ph.D. from Columbia University. His honors include fellowships from the Guggenheim Foundation, the National Endowment for the Humanities, the S.U.N.Y. Foundation, and the Robert Frost Library. Among his publications are Vida's Christiad and Vergilian Epic; The Altar and the City: A Reading of Vergil's Aeneid; A Concordance to the Complete Writings of George Herbert (with Rigo Mignani); The Tanner Manuscript of George Herbert's "The Temple" (prepared in collaboration with Amy Charles); and numerous scholarly articles.

Beautiful poems, insightful commentary

This is a Norton Critical Edition, which means it includes textual notes, annotations, and commentary (as well as the poems themselves). It excels in all areas.
Di Cesare gives us the poems of five great English poets: George Herbert, Richard Crashaw, Andrew Marvell, Henry Vaughan and Thomas Traherne. All lived and wrote in the 1600's, and all were known for the religious passion and spiritual imagination of their poetry (though he includes some secular poetry of Crashaw and Marvell). I picked it up because I had read some haunting verse by Herbert, little realizing what a treasure I had before me. For those who are interested in the intersection of beauty, intellect and spirit, I can think of no greater English book.
The first two hundred pages are given to the poems themselves. Di Cesare gives a one page introduction to each poet, and also includes helpful annotations (crucial since the English is so old). The annotations themselves, though brief, often go beyond explaining the meaning of a word or allusion, and end up giving real insight into the meaning of the poem.
The next 20 pages are textual notes on the poets, that is, Di Cesare's explanations on why he included the forms of word choice and spelling, as well as alternate (or earlier) line choices.
The last 160 pages (besides the bibliography) consists of collected criticism of the poets by figures such as Coleridge, Huxley, Auden, Eliot as well as another two dozen less familiar names. The essays I read were extremely insightful and helpful.
All in all, this has quickly become one of my favorite books. A huge thanks to Norton for this fine edition.

Excellent for literary purposes and for thinking richly about God

Excellent texts that you will want to read and reread slowly so as to let the full depth of the poems sink in. I especially enjoyed Traherne and Herbert. It is obvious that these authors had a deep relationship with God and had spent many hours meditating on the richnesss of His love towards us.

I didn’t realize that this text was also a criticism and editorials of the poems. My bad. I was interested only in the poems and to this end roughly half of the book is dedicated to poets George Herbert, Richard Crashaw, Andrew Marvell, Henry Vaughan, and Thomas Traherne. We read selections from their bodies of work and that is what I wanted. Of Herbert I was quite affected by his offering on the passion narrative of the Christ in “The Sacrifice” and one day I may attempt to make use of this wonderful and piercing poem in an Easter Sunday church service somehow. Crashaw’s “Music’s Duel” impressed but I had a hard time digging in to his work. Marvell’s work was steeped in sensuality and his themes and elucidations seemed to me to be more contemporary. I found his work “The Nymph Complaining for the Death of her Fawn” to be warm and touching. Vaughan’s poems were especially religious and finding God within the mundanity of nature. Often dense and especially biblically referential my favorite of his was probably the gospel account of “The Rainbow”. Traherne (if I remember correctly) was intensely focused on a mystical intuition that revolved around purity as embodied in childhood and even pre-existence. His poems left me cold but if I had to pick one that moved me the most it would be “The Preparative”. As to the other half of the book I forced myself to read through it. It was like being in a college lit course so if you’re into that then, sure, pick up this edition. If not you may want to look toward a collected works only. But I will say that there was some reward in reading through the criticisms and studies of the poets and some of their poems in that it helps with the understanding of some of the poems at times and other essays help to expound upon what the author believes a particular poet was often trying to get at. There were also a couple of replies included such as a Karina Williamson (‘Marvell’s “The Nymph Complaining for the Death of Her Fawn”: A Reply’) and these back-and-forth arguments were enlightening and fun at times. But, still, fun in an English lit class sorta way.
