Dark and thought-provoking tales

Widely regarded as an author of children's books, the truth is that Welsh writer Roald Dahl shows himself in this collection as one of the best short story authors in the twentieth century. His acerbic, weird and sometimes cruel adult-oriented fictions are compellingly written and leave the reader guessing the conclusion of the story until the very end.

Dahl's narratives featured in this volume share one aspect in common, the use of the so-called "twisted ending", a technique first employed with very satisfactory results by Ambrose Bierce and then overused by a popular writer like O. Henry. These kind of surprise endings cause the reader to change his perception about the story he's just read, even encouraging him to read it again (one of the biggest accomplishments that a writer can achieve).

The story that opens the book ("Taste") is unarguably a masterpiece. The sinister undertone, the narrative pace, the suspense, the almost sickening attention to the details in the manners and gestures of the characters, makes it a very intense piece of fiction that will make you stand on your toes until you've finished it.

Other few good examples of Dahl's literary talent are "Lamb to the Slaughter", a cynical story about disappointment, murder and deceit, or "Man of the South", perhaps the most famous tale by Dahl (adapted to the screen more than once).

"Skin" is another great fiction about a man with the most valuable back available. I think that this tale in particular draws heavily from a story written by SAKI (Dahl loved his work and it's easy to see why) called "The Background" (in which a very similar character is described).

"Nunc Dimittis" tells us about the Machiavellian revenge of a man with hurted feelings against a woman who has dared to say he was `boring' and `predictable'. The story is superbly written and executed. The ending is one the best.

"Mrs. Bixley and the Colonel's Coat" ranks also as one of his most hilarious tales. It is an excellent comment on materialism and the hypocrisy with regard to marital infidelity. One of my favourites. "Parson's Pleasure" is another gem.

Dahl is not always equally successful with his stories, but as a whole, it is worth reading. Perhaps one of the last geniuses of the short story form. Very interesting. He's an antidote against so much bad prose out there...

Personally, I had never read anything by this author before and this book has been a great introduction to his narrative. Terror, suspense, satire, fantasy, all these genres intermingle together in this anthology. I strongly recommend it. I'm looking forward for more.

Don't Pass This Little Gem By.........

Dahl is known for many of his other works of greater length, but these short stories are phenomenal! It's odd to think of Dahl writing such dark stories when he is viewed by many as a children's author, but if one really reads his children's books they see a malicious/sadistic side to them at times. What a great writer Dahl is/was and this collection is a tribute to his fantastic ability. Every story is well-crafted and it only takes a page or two to really draw the reader in. Thanks, R.D.

Every Parent Needs to Read this Book!

This was one of the BEST parenting books I have ever read!! Milton talks about 'entitled children' and how we, as parents, are inadvertantly creating them in droves. He discusses ways to keep your kids from mooching off you forever. He also will teach you how to parent so that your child can someday be independant (also known as old-fashion values). This is the book to read if you DON'T want your 30-year old child still living in your house!

As a parent of two grown sons who is on the other side of the parenting spectrum, I can attest to the veracity of Milton's observations. This is not only a great book on parenting, but it matched up squarely wtih my own perspective on the joys, the pearls and the pitfals of the most important job one will ever have. Milton integrates his understanding of child rearing with the approach espoused in the biblical model. It is accurate, straightforward advice unlike many other parenting books that proffer the mealy-mouthed, politically correct advice of so-called child rearing experts who espouse post-modern psycho-babble. As a parent himself, Milton provides practical advise based on real life experiences and observations that help to explain why society has failed to provide an entire generation of youth with the foundational tools, work ethic and motivation needed to succeed.

Without the bad language, it would be a 5 star book.

This book definitely keeps one guessing. Four people are approached online about becoming investors and they go to a meeting held in a warehouse. They are unable to leave and are being held accountable for the wrongful imprisonment of an innocent young man. Each will have to comply with certain requirements in a given period of time to be freed. To not comply would cause something more drastic. The author provides twists and turns and tension. I thought the writer definitely has talent. So why only 3 stars? The language was crude and vulgar and because of it, I won't read any others of the same writer and I can't recommend this book. What a shame for a gifted writer to feel it was necessary to do that. While there are those who speak that way, many do not and do not want to read books with that language.

A great and highly satisfying read

The story is wonderful, the characters are believable, and John Mathews writes in a way that is totally clear and visual. I loved the scenes, with traps, and tough choices for the people involved. This is a great concept and I wish that this was done in real life! Corruption sucks, and this story will leave you smiling, with an ending that is surprising and satisfying. I highly recommend this author, as I've really enjoyed both of his books and love his writing style. Kudos!

A Brief, but Suspenseful, Read!

The premise of this novel is something that most people only imagine: vigilante justice. The world is full of cruel, selfish people. These individuals are likely to traumatize people who obstruct their agendas. What if the average person could right some of those wrongs? Would he choose to right them within the law, or outside the law—given the choice? It sounds like the subject of a Hollywood movie.

Indeed, it is the subject of John Mathews’ latest novel—another adventure into the minds of selfish, clueless, or unethical people. It is also another adventure into the world of questions, such as: “Who’s good deep down?”; “Who’s bad deep down?”; and, ”Who’s really calling the shots?”

Another familiar query is, “How are they going to get out of this one?” Much of the action takes place in a small area under tight security. So, the reader is left wondering how the main characters are going to escape, or diminish, their ordeal.

The dialogue and details are spot on. Everything from the setting to the characters’ clothing is meticulously described. The dialogue is believable; it flows nicely. The characters speak according to their level of education and training.

This book is a short, enjoyable, suspenseful read. It provides a nice break from the daily grind. It might even make you want to cheer in some places!

Definitive treatment of clinical prediction

More than half a century after its original publication in 1954, this remains the most important scholarly work on this subject. As Meehl noted in this monograph and elsewhere, he most emphatically was not comparing different ways of gathering information (e.g., tests vs. interviews). Rather, he was comparing different ways of integrating whatever information has been gathered to make the most valid predictions possible, and thereby to use the most ethically defensible decision-making procedure. One could gather the information through tests (standardized, projective, etc.), interviews (structured, unstructured, or semi-structured), archival records (school, medical, criminal, etc.), informants (family, coworkers, etc.), and a number of other ways.

Meehl's analysis dealt with how all of this information is combined. Should we do it in our heads, or should we use a mechanical decision aid, such as an equation or an actuarial table? He presented a sophisticated analysis of the task and considered conditions that might favor each approach. In one chapter, he reviewed the available empirical data, but this is not the focal point of this monograph.

An article by Grove and Meehl (1996) provides an excellent treatment of objections to mechanical decision aids, with persuasive rebuttals for each, and a meta-analysis by Grove et al (2000) provide a quantitative review of the empirical literature on the subject, including 136 studies that met fairly strict inclusion criteria (in contrast to the 20 studies that were available to Meehl for review in 1954).

Meehl's original conclusion that mechanical decision aids achieve validity rates equal or superior to those of experts exercising their unaided judgment has stood the test of time and is now supported by such a large and diverse array of studies that an impartial reader can reasonably conclude that this "controversy" has been settled.

Importance of Meehl's "little book"

This is probably one of the most important books ever written (early 50's), and as a result widely ignored by fields that relied (or rely) upon subjective judgements such as medicine. The last time I read anything about this issue, there had not been one study that contradicted Meehl's basic findings (see for example, work by Hastie and Dawes). Yet, irrational decision making is pervasive. Years ago I went through medical school and a psychiatry residency without one reference to this book. I had to find this on my own, and fortunately did so in the late 70's. This and issues such as construct validity, improper linear models, and at least the idea of Bayesian statistics got me into a lot of trouble with my fellow workers in mental health who made totally irrational clinical decisions seriously harming many people (I worked in public mental health centers for the most part); so ultimately Meehl was responsible for my ending a very frustrating career in public psychiatry. Long story. People always tell me I should write a book. Of all the things I studied for many years, Meehl was the foundation.

An analysis of interviews VS psychological tests

Despite the ago of this book (written around 1954 as an expansion of lectures given in the years 1947-1950, fifth printing (unchanged) in 1963), the points raised by Paul Meehl remain current.
Paul Meehl asks himself the question what "how can we predict how a person is going to behave?". He distinguishes 2 main approaches: clinical interviews VS statistics (psychometric tests) and discusses the pros and cons of both approaches.
For decades psychologists have been struggling between the use of tests (statistics) and (clinical) interviews. I ran into the problem myself when I did a Whiplash study in 1999 and found that many doctors made clear mistakes during the patient's LAB Profile interviews, to such an extend that the produced data was unreliable for further research! Since then, I reluctantly moved over to the testing side and co-developed the iWAM test (see jobEQ.com), but I recommend complementing tests with structured follow up interviews to check the validity of the test answers.
One of his main points pro testing is that "Every hour a clinician spends in thinking and talking about whom to treat, and how and how long, is being subtracted from the available pool of therapeutic time itself." The main counter argument of a clinician will be that every individual is a separate case and thus becomes hard to find in the numbers.
In global, one can say that Meehl holds a quite impartial point of view and tries to present approaches in a factual manner, trying to bring them together. A slight bias towards testing may be expected, given that Paul Meehl was a professor of Psychology and psychiatry at the University of Minnesota and also wrote a book on the clinical use of MMPI.

Excellent book. Madhav and Riya make a good story and it takes new turns when they go on spaceship and explore new intergalactical planetary systems. Book deals nicely with the poverty, terrorism, depression during world war 2 and world political problems. Or may be not, I am just hallucinating. This is a simple book with simple story. Once upon a time, there was a Bihari boy called Madhav. He fell in love with a rich girl from Delhi called Riya. Madhav did not speak English well. Riya did. Madhav wanted a relationship. Riya didn't. Riya just wanted friendship. Madhav didn't. Riya suggested a compromise. She agreed to be his half-girlfriend. Is this a book or a screen play is what kept confusing me while I was reading this book. In fact I could see someone like Arjun/ Ranveer playing Madhav and Deepika playing a Ria. This is a book with the complete dialogues of a movie, sentence after sentence. Every page of the book feels like it has been written to be made into a movie. So much that the book is separated into three sections called Acts. Talking about the book, it is very much in the genre of the author s previous offerings. Boy meets girl in a cool campus (moving away from the IIT/ IIM to Stephens, probably in an attempt to widen the reader base), and falls in love. Add some drama, a little sex (must in a CB book), whole lot of daily life situations and some emotionally moving dialogues. You have a story ready. There is not much relevance of the title in the book, and it seems more a ploy to fulfil the authors fetish obsession with numbers (all his books have a number in them). Also, as it was touted in the media, there is not much relevance of the Language divide those who know English and those who don t. This again seems like a concept that has been force fitted into the theme of the book, to make it relevant to the present day reader. This is one thing that Chetan Bhagat needs to be given complete credit for. He knows the pulse of the nation and what the present day youth is thinking. Chetan Bhagat published his first novel first novel 'Five Point Someone' in 2004 and this very first venture took him to the peaks of fame and popularity. The book depicted the story of an IIT student who considers himself to be below average than all the other students in IIT. This book won the Society Young Achiever's Award and Publisher's Recognition Award. The story was adopted into a film directed by Rajkumar Hirani and starred famous Bollywood stars like Aamir Khan, Madhavan, Sharman Joshi and Kareena Kapoor. His second book was 'One Night At A Call Center' and this too was a great success. This book was made into a movie and was named 'Hello' and Chetan himself wrote the script. The movie was noted by the special appearance of Bollywood star Salman Khan and was an average hit. His next novel has cricket as the major theme. It is named 'Three Mistakes of My Life'. His fourth book is named 'Two States'.

My brother recommended this book. I bought it but it took me a while before i started reading it. The title of the book actually made me more curious.

It took a while before the title :half girlfriend, was defined. I didnt like it but i needed to know how the story ended.

I find the story unbelievable. But i enjoyed reading about india, its culture, food and the words. Unfortuantely, i ran into a wall when i tried using the dictionary on my kindle to understand some of the indian words.

i gave it 4 stars because the author was not boring in narrating the story. The author used different places to make it interesting for me to just keep reading the book. I liked it and hope to see an improvement on the author's next storyline.

Very touching novel. Very real issues experienced by migrants...spoke to issues experienced by women ,rural towns and their struggles, highlighted the economic n political issues experienced in many rural areas. Most importantly it speaks to one person's determination to improve these issues and to fight for the love of his live. Lots of live lessons were learnt, never run away from your problems somehow one day you will have to face them.People dislike and discourage what they don't understand once you believe in your heart don't let people dissuade you.....Finally there are still some good people with big hearts out there...Not sure if this was a true story but great technique Chetan

Different, cute and entertaining

This book was suggested by amazon when it was available on kindle for free. I said: why not? I was having a difficult time and was desperate for something unusual to take my mind away from trouble. I've never heard of Chetan before, was never encouraged to read an India-based love story and I'm not really into basketball either, so for me to pick it up was plain luck.

I found the story endearing and hopeful, being the main lesson to never give up. On anything. If you can dream, you certainly can do.
