Very good read

Lady Alyssa is a hardworking no-nonsense noblewoman. Her wastrel father has her selling off all kinds of treasures from her beloved estate to pay his gambling debts, so when the Duke of Gillingham, Lord Morgan shows up at her country estate, of course, she believes he is there to settle an IOU.

She is surprised to discover that her father has sold her home out from under her to Morgan. Not too worry, she has money set aside to live in a small cottage but even that is taken from her to pay her father's debts. When Morgan hears of Alyssa's dilemma he is appalled and decides to employ her as the steward of the house until his brother and his wife take residence. Alyssa gladly accepts this job.

There is a powerful attraction between self-reliant Alyssa and Morgan. She erroneously believes though that he loves her and wants to marry her but Morgan is of the ilk that marriage is not for him and proposes to set her up as a mistress. Alyssa flatly refuses this offer, she is honorable.

Interwoven into this story is Morgan's search for British traitors. He does not reveal this to Alyssa and she is actually unaware of his clandestine dealings until almost the end of the book.

Both the leads acted reasonably and more importantly they never let a lot of misunderstandings get in the way of their romance. How refreshing for people to forgive each other quickly and for them to say those important words, "I am sorry." Even though Alyssa is very independently minded she is not immovably stubborn. She thinks through her situations logically and has the sensibilities of a woman living in the 19th century This is one of Ms. Basso's best.

betrayal of the heart......but in a good way!

Lady Alyssa Carrington was an independent woman growing up under the care of the family servants and a string of governesses and taking the responsibility of her father's misdeeds from a tender age. She was never introduced into society, never been to a ball and the gentry around Westgate Manor shunned her because she was too good - being a woman - in managing the estate. She always dreamed of having a husband and children of her own, so naturally after one light of illicit passion, when Duke of Gillingham offered for her, she gladly accepted thinking it was a marriage proposal.

But for Lord Morgan Ashton, Duke of Gillingham, now the owner of Westgate Manor, it wasn't a marriage proposal, but a proposal to be his mistress. Morgan previously had a disastrous marriage and after the death of his wife, he vowed never to marry and put himself through the pain and humiliation again. He was attracted to Alyssa and after that one night he believes Alyssa is attracted to him too. But later, his marriage proposal made to correct her misunderstanding was soundly rejected and he was requested to stay away for her forever.

But don't worry dear readers, they do get back together. How and why? You have to read the book to find out for yourself.

I convey my kudos to Adrienne Basso who does a wonderful job for brining the characters to life. Morgan plays the role of the arrogant duke to perfection, effectively hiding his wounded and tender heart; with Alyssa in the role of the a strong headed female with a stubbornness and giving heart needed to show Morgan that love heals all wound. Besides the passion and romance, Ms. Basso also introduces a subplot which is a delight and sometimes causes friction between the two characters which is enjoyment for the readers. She does a wonderful job of showing us how women were treated in Regency high society and that if love is involved - albeit unknown to the characters at first - it brings them together and they finally find the true contentment that they really deserve.

Historical tale of sex and spies

Morgan Ashton, Duke of Gillingham is drawn in to the world of spies, much to his chagrin, because some spy activity is being linked to one of his properties. It's in his best interest to aid the government and find out who the real villains are. About the same time that he is made aware of these things, he participates in an auction for a Viscount's country estate - not that he's all that interested, he bids almost as an afterthought. He goes to the won property, on the way to his own, to inspect exactly what he's won. He fully expects to find the Viscount. What he finds instead is a rather shappy estate and the Viscount's daughter Alyssa Carrington is running the estate in the capacity that a man would as a paid estate manager. Morgan is shocked by this state of affairs. Not only is the pretty and very capable running things, but it appears she has been doing so for some time as well as handling the settling of the Viscount's gaming debts. He is also surprised that nobody has informed Alyssa that the property has been auctioned off. One reason, other than the fact that her father has never given her or her welfare much consideration, is that word arrives that her father has committed suicide. Alyssa is devastated - if for no other reason than the little nest egg that she has been putting aside for the day when something like this may happen is eaten away by her father's other debts. In the end she secures a position of supervising the refurbrishing of Westgate Manor for Morgan's family members. During this time he and Alyssa engage in a very passionate affair. The start of this is a HUGE misunderstanding. Morgan proposes Alyssa be his mistress but he unintentionally phrases it so that she believes he is proposing marriage. I was surprised the misunderstanding went on as long as it did. When they both clearly understand each other, it understandably leads to very hurt feelings. Alyssa winds up pregnant and they end up marrying. The one thing I disliked about this book was how long the enstrangement between the two lasts. It goes on too long for my tastes.

Mastering Humor in Speech Seems Possible!

Humor is speech is the basis of the book as I understand. The author seems to have mastered the craft and have poured in, many tips and techniques with examples to help readers create a funny speech in an enduring way. Being funny is no easy task, and this book takes steps and is informative to help make this task a bit easier.
The step-by-step approach taken by the author helps in following the concept and the flow of the book. Additional examples and videos is a bonus. The book intends in some way addresses various audiences and settings from the large crowd in the auditorium to the small setting of the coffee table. All in all easy to read and example oriented book that is inspiring and informative.

About the Author

Bryan R. Fischer is owner of Advanced Dimensional Management LLC, which provides consulting and training in GD&T, tolerance analysis, dimensional management, 3D model-based engineering, and related fields, including 3D MBD and MBE, product documentation quality, and engineering standards. Mr. Fischer is recognized as a leading expert with more than 25 years of industrial experience in these areas. Having worked as a GD&T expert, tolerance analyst, dimensional management engineer, and design lead, he has also been a designer, checker, design drafter, and CAD systems programmer, as well as a trainer and consultant in the areas of GD&T, drawing quality, dimensional management and tolerance analysis. He trains and consults in many industries, both commercial and government, with companies ranging from very small to the largest multi-national corporations. He has consulted with inspection and CAD software developers to help them improve their implementations of GD&T, 3D PMI, and model-based product definition practices. He also works with companies around the world helping them to understand and implement 3D model-based product definition and model-based enterprise methods. Bryan has been active in the area of corporate, national, and international standards development and standards management throughout his career, and a longtime member of several standards development committees. He is a member of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME), the American Society for Quality, and SAE International. He is also an ASME Certified Senior Level GD&T Professional.

Interesting Material to learn and teach tolerance stacks

The book provide a good examples from the basic method of tolerance stack up calculation, like Worst case scenario and provide a good detail of the most advances like statistical tolerance stacks in multiple dimensions.The other good point is that the book is supported in most of the examples with the usage of GD&T examples which help me to understand in a better detail the application of the standard and the tolerance stack up calculation.

Good book to begin to learn and improve your skills in t-stacks, however I will still look for more examples, similar to the design that I am reviewing in my work today.(Consumer goods / Appliances)

Introduction to mechanical tolerance analysis

Read the book from cover to cover and work some examples. You should come away with a basic understanding of tolerance analysis and organizational skills to help your results make sense when you or your boss looks at it 2 weeks later. Don't give up read the whole book.

Readers ask: "Wait, shouldn't this be 2 books?" - Well...My answer: I actually was going to make this two books it but decided against it at the last minute and I don't regret it.When I first started writing this first book in the Baxter Family Saga, I had no idea I was breaking some rule about having two stories in one or that I was supposed to have two different books. The fact that I wasn't writing a standard story that worked towards a particular formula was one of the reasons they were interested. I just knew that I had a story that I liked and showed how a family's history can repeat itself in strange ways. I also felt that the idea of having two stories in one book like this was something I'd never really seen before.Some people have said, it wasn't done right, or it was supposed to be two books...I say, Unchained Hearts came out exactly how I hoped it would and the readers' responses have shown that. As a first book, I'm excited and grateful that I wrote it and that my former publisher, Beau Coup, thought it was good enough to publish. I have also been fortunate to have some great notes from readers who said they loved it and even asked me about the characters a little more...I LOVE THAT.Unchained Hearts is supposed to raise questions, it's supposed to have loose ends, it's supposed to make you scratch your head and question my sanity. It's also supposed to have a bit of a soap opera/Lifetime movie feel to it.�Why? The thing about those two mediums is that you wind up losing time with them. I remember saying to myself, I'll just watch this one lifetime movie or a little bit of this soap. A couple of hours later, I'm wondering where the time went and why do I have to get up when something's about to get good. I have lost many hours watching Lifetime movies.I got sucked in and I like that.Believe me, I thought I was going a little crazy when I wrote it because it felt a bit scary and different. No family is ever that neat and tidy and the Baxters are no exception. The skeletons will rattle from time to time and may never stop.�That's fine with me; bring on the bones, I say.So if you want to get the full understanding of the Baxters, check out Portrait of Gray and Story of Us. Then you'll understand just how much the Baxters have had to endure and why the crazy first story was just the beginning.Unchained Hearts is now on Pinterest! Wow, absolutely wonderful.

This was a recommended book and I didn't even read the summary before I purchased it. I was a little confused at the beginning when I was introduced to Kyle and then the story started about her mother. But as it started to get going, I completely forgot about Kyle until I was brought back to the present and then very much enjoyed going back into the past but this time being Kyle's past.

Wow, that is all that I can say. I have read many books with twists and turns that keep me on the edge of my seat, but the way it was portrayed and introduced with how it was beautifully written, this book takes the cake. One of the best books, hands down, that I have read this year and I look forward to reading more from this author.

This is the first book that I have read by this author and i will definitely be seeking out more to ready by her. There is so much more to this story than the typical boy meets girl etc. The author gives a glimpse of how race relations were in the early 70's. She illustrates how it wasn't just the white people that had to adjust to the changes. That was fascinating to me. I don't want to give too much away because this is tale that is full of interesting twists and turns and I feel that it would be wrong of me to give "spoilers". Suffice to say that this is a very well written and gripping book with characters that are east to relate to.

I must admit I didn't initially like Lila when the story started and I wanted to skip the first few chapters because it dropped back some years to when Cass and Lila met BUT I admit I grew to like them. The beginning made Cass and Lila make since especially given the interracial dynamic. Cass and Lila could have had their own book but reading their story would later parallel into the story of Kyle and Randy (who knew and what a surprise) which made the whole story make sense. As others have mentioned this is two love stories within one book and for me I would not have cheered for Kyle and Randy if I didn't read Cass and Lila first. I won't give the stories away but this is a well crafted book with interesting characters that the more I read the more interested I became in what happened next. I will definitely buy the 2nd installment to hopefully catch up on characters that have been introduced and perhaps more background on others that had a small part in the 1st book.

About the Author
James Blish (1921-75) studied microbiology at Rutgers and then served as a medical laboratory technician in the US army during the Second World War. Among his best-known books are CITIES IN FLIGHT, A CASE OF CONSCIENCE, for which he won the HUGO AWARD in 1959 for Best Novel, DOCTOR MIRABILIS, BLACK EASTER and THE DAY AFTER JUDGEMENT.

Aidoo ( Our Sister Killjoy or Reflections from a Black-Eyed Squint ) writes with intense power in a novel that, in examining the role of women in modern African society, also sheds light on women's problems around the globe. Esi, a woman living in Accra, Ghana, takes her career as a data analyst for the government seriously. An incident of marital rape, the result of her husband's anger at Esi's independence, leads to their separation. She is attracted to a married man named Ali who offers to make her his second wife. At first the arrangement appeals to Esi--she can make her work a priority--but eventually Ali's constant traveling and the way he puts off coming to see her begins to bother her. Aidoo makes use of different formats. Occasionally she provides an explanation in the form of a poetic note embedded in the text, and there are spurts of conversation in script form. In one such section Esi's mother and grandmother discuss her choice. Esi's no-nonsense grandmother says, "Leave one man, marry another. What is the difference?" Nevertheless, their sexist husbands, who are impervious to the feminist thinking of their wives, remain unsympathetic. Esi finally makes a statement by choosing divorce, career, and a polygamous remarriage--which ultimately becomes an exchange of one set of challenges for another. Prize-winning Ghanaian-born author Aidoo takes a satirical look at modern women and points out similarities in their lives--whether in Africa or anywhere else. An informative, if a tad schematic, novel from Ghanaian writer Aidoo (Our Sister Killjoy, etc.--not reviewed) about women's identities and needs in contemporary Africa. The Stunning Esi Sekyi is, in fact, the very model of a modern African woman. She has a postgraduate degree, works for the department of statistics in Accra, and earns more than her schoolmaster husband Oku. And with only one child, she is free to travel to international conferences and advance her career. But African society and African men--despite their admiration of intelligent, educated women--still cling to the old ways. When Oku makes love to Esi against her will (his friends are laughing at him because ``they think I'm not behaving like a man''), Esi calls it ``marital rape''--a concept, she realizes, that African ``society could not possibly have an indigenous word for...[since] sex is something a husband claims from his wife as a right.'' She asks for a divorce, much to her family's dismay, and begins an affair with charismatic businessman Ali Kondey. Meanwhile, an old friend, Opukuya, a married nurse and mother, tries to be supportive, but she's torn between her conventional ideas about marriage and the realization that she envies Esi's freedom. Though Ali is married, he is a Muslin and can have more than one wife. And so he and Esi marry--a curiously old-fashioned decision for an apparently modern woman, since Ali spends more time with his other family than he does with Esi. Finally, the two drift apart, and Esi is left to wonder ``what fashion of loving was she ever going to consider adequate.'' Esi seems more foolish than victimized, but the attitudes of the society portrayed here are real enough--and do add a new dimension to an otherwise familiar story. The above title sums up the gift I received from reading this masterpiece. It definitely gave a lot of food for thought. A must read for all burdened by the urgency and necessity for a changing narrative for African women.
