About the Author
Michael W. Taft is an author, editor, meditation teacher, and neuroscience junkie. He is currently a meditation coach specializing in secular, science-based meditation training in corporate settings. Michael is the author of several books, including Ego (which he co-authored), as well as the editor of such books as Hardwiring Happiness by Rick Hanson and the upcoming The Science of Enlightenment by Shinzen Young. He often teaches at Google and has worked on curriculum development for SIYLI. Michael is also an official advisor to the Therapeutic Neuroscience Lab. He was previously editor-in-chief of Being Human, a site for exploring what evolution, neuroscience, biology, psychology, archeology, and technology can tell us about the human condition, and was editorial director of Sounds True. An excellent and accessible overview of Nondualism

Michael Taft’s brief guide was a perfect overview for me, a daily meditator with roots in the Vipassana tradition. I now have a basic understanding of Nondualism (“the philosophical and religious concept that all things are essentially one,” as defined by Taft) and its place in the history of spiritual thought; it is a jumping off point for me to dive into detailed histories of Nondualism in Eastern and Western thought. I highly recommend this to anyone in a Nondual practice who would like to see how Nondualism fits into other traditions.

Exellent little book. I enjoy reading this a lot. I am recognizing a lot in my experience. I am learning a treamendous lot and it is deepening my experience. 35 Years ago I have been in a class to study Shankara. Now I can defenitely relate to his thoughts on nonduality. Very cool book!! Thanks Michael!! The unpretentious way of writing makes this history very accesseble.

modern and easy to read introduction to Nondualism

A short, concise, modern and easy to read introduction to Nondualism. I really liked how the author set out right away the difference between nondual awareness (nonduality in practice), and the study of the subject, Nondualism. He focused on the latter. He covers most of the big areas in the history of Nondualism, and it sets the stage for more research, if one is interested.

In drawing Alice, Walrath literally enrobes her with cut-up pages from Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland. She weaves elements from Lewis Carroll’s classic throughout her text, using evocative phrases from the novel to introduce the vignettes, such as “Disappearing Alice,” “Missing Pieces,” “Falling Slowly,” “Curiouser and Curiouser,” and “A Mad Tea Party.”

Walrath writes that creating this book allowed her not only to process her grief over her mother’s dementia, but also “to remember the magic laughter of that time.” Graphic medicine, she writes, “lets us better understand those who are hurting, feel their stories, and redraw and renegotiate those social boundaries. Most of all, it gives us a way to heal and to fly over the world as Alice does.” In the end, Aliceheimer’s is indeed strangely and utterly uplifting.

Like the illustrations

As an artist, art therapist, and daughter of a mother with Alzheimers, I was thrilled, encouraged and comforted by this book. Walrath's format and excerpts of caring for her mother are creative and sensitively wrought. The illustrations are lively, humorous and provocative. The total work is framed as a journey of moments shared and transformed - both past and present. Her comments and direct responses are heartfelt and helpful. She has mastered the art of replies as caregiver that are direct, brief, honest - yet therapeutic. Not once did I have the sense that she was unaware of the person beneath the layers of the disease. The journey is difficult, yet brought back repeatedly as moments in time possible to simplify and reassure based on sensitivity, respect. Like the illustrations, these moments are open ended yet grounded. While informative, Aliceheimer's does not read like an instruction manual. It reads more like a love story, and a second chance at making a stronger connection. It reminds me that authenticity of the moment can be possible in this challenging journey. Many times I was surprised how Walrath could hit on the core of an incident, based on shared memories of her mother as well as present situation.

A wonderful book.

Aliceheimer's is Dana Walrath's loving gift to her mother who, having Alzheimers disease, could "read" the pictures but not words. The book offered me a new view of Alzheimer's--that it can be seen as another way of being, similar to belonging to another culture. Dana Walrath is both a clear writer and accomplished artist, and both inform the book.

Dana's portrait of her mother is sympathetic without being maudlin, and it offers important insights. For example, that most Alzheimers sufferers have their social faculties intact. If you become tense around them, they will become tense too. Although the book is not a "how to" work at all, as a former caregiver, I wish this book had been available years ago when I cared for my grandmother. Given these insights, I would have done it better.

Just finished this book today. A stunningly beautiful read in both word and image. Everyone caring for someone with Alzheimer's will find wisdom and comfort in these pages. So glad my husband her Dana Walrath on VPR and told me about this.

If you read nothing else in Native American history, be sure to read this book!

This is by far the best book I have read so far, from all of the Native American books on Amazon. It is also the best of quality of the books I have received, even though it's soft bound. You will take a historical adventure with Black Elk at your side to the Little Big Horn and to Wounded Knee. This book was written from the transcripts of the original author who lived with Black Elk while writing it. The book was translated by Black Elk's son who was fluent in English and in the Sioux language. There are footnotes throughout by a reviewing author that tells of when the author strays from the original transcripts. I think they could have been left out or put at the end of the book. I would read the entire chapter, then go back and read the footnotes, as there are so many that they kind of get in the way. At times though, I must admit they help out. This is a real life Native American history as told by one who lived it. His vision, is probably one of the most important lessons in all of Native American history and belief systems. I truly think this is one of the best books that I have read so far, and intend to read it again. It makes me sorry to read of our military efforts to exterminate our Native Americans and our government treaties that were broken. We are truly blessed by our Native American spirituality, history and wisdom. I can only pray that we work together on this earth and honor our words in the future.

Must Read classic

I didn't read this edition; a little paperback version came to me. I read it long ago and read it again recently. This book had an incredible impact on me. Over the years people have come to criticize the author, John Neidhardt. The book ends somewhat abruptly not long after Wounded Knee and then there is an account of Black Elk's prayer on Harney Peak when he was an old man and he asked to make his people live again kind of tacked on the end. Many seem to feel Neidhardt was exploiting Black Elk to get a book out of him. I don't claim to be an expert on Black Elk and this subject, but from what I know I do not agree with the totally cynical assessment. Black Elk had been off the reservation in the Buffalo Bill Show and given his experiences he was hardly naive or ignorant. Black Elk's son Ben had been in the Carlyle school so he would have known if the book did not reflect his father's vision and words and life. The book was also not an instant bestseller. Neidhardt promoted this book and Black Elk's vision tirelessly until the end of his life and I truly believe it was because he saw the incredible spiritual nature of Black Elk, his life, and visions. And his "great vision" as a youngster can only be described as cataclysmic and psychedelic. When the spirits want you to see something you will see it and no drugs are necessary.

Neidhardt left out the ensuing years on Pine Ridge Reservation and Black Elk's acceptance of Catholicism to frame a lost way of life, the sadness and injustice of it, and the greatness and seeming inevitability of Black Elk's vision. I believe any poetic license taken was in service of bringing forth a greater truth. The book was not meant to be a biography or history of the Lakota, but to preserve Black Elk's vision and so the purpose of the book was accomplished. Those who want to pick at the book miss the greater impact of Black Elk's life and vision. As this was not Neidhardt's culture he probably also didn't totally understand nor was he able to explain some things, but again, are we missing the greater truth of the book by focusing on imperfections? Read this book with an open heart and you won't be disappointed.

Some feel Black Elk became a Catholic as a way of continuing to teach the Lakota way along with the Christian faith to preserve the Lakota culture. I believe he was intelligent and had such a great spirit he saw he could blend both faiths and build a bridge for the future. Nor was he intimidated into the Christian faith. His daughter said his acceptance of the Catholic faith was true and not a sham to keep teaching the Lakota ways surreptitiously. After reading this book, if Black Elk interests you there are books available on the later half of his life. Black Elk lived until 1950. You may also be interested in The Sacred Pipe: Black Elk's Account of the Seven Rites of the Oglala Sioux (The Civilization of the American Indian Series).

If you would like a somewhat different perspective or style of writing you might take a look at Lame Deer, Seeker of Visions (Enriched Classics). Lame Deer felt Black Elk Speaks missed the mark in some ways so he enlisted the help of Richard Erdoes to write his own book as Lame Deer did not speak much English. I enjoyed reading Lame Deer, Seeker of Visions as there is humor and compassion toward all in his account of his life and that of his people.

A Devastating View of the White Man's Betrayal of the Sioux

This is an authentic recollection, taken down in 1930 by a professor/anthropologist, of a Sioux medicine man and warrior's life, an Indian who was present at both the defeat of General Custer (1876) and the massacre of Sioux women and children at Wounded Knee in 1890. The speaker,
Black Elk, tells with great poignancy his early visions as a youth that propelled him to be a healer; of the betrayal of his Sioux people by the whites when gold was discovered in the Black Hills of Dakota territory; of the "rubbing out of Long Hair" ( the defeat of Custer), of Black Elk's travels in Europe as a performer in Buffalo Bill Cody's Wild West Show; and finally of his return to the frontier to witness and fight against US soldiers at Wounded Knee. He also recounts the assassinations of Crazy Horse and Sitting Bull by the Reservation police.
This is a book that should be on the reading list of every US high school's American History class. It is a rare insight into the broken treaties and the final betrayal, incarceration and placing on reservations of the proud, independent Sioux nation. It is the end of the frontier and the end of a way of life. Sadly, it is also a curtain raiser to the same kind of atrocities, little known, that US forces committed against Filipinos in the first years of the 1900's; and it leads to My Lai in Vietnam, and Abu Gharib in Iraq. It is another reminder that war and colonization is hell, and that commanders cannot be counted on to restrain their men, and that the casualties of conquest are more often civilians than soldiers.
The real sadness of this book, however, is Black Elk's measured but ultimately tragic telling of the death of the Sioux way of life in the final decades of the 1800's, of the breaking of their spirit, and the perishing of their magical, nomadic culture at the hands of "Western progress."

True to the Recordings

This book is better than I even hoped it would be. Each one of these pieces is a carbon copy of the original songs as heard on C418's Minecraft: Volume Alpha. Original key signatures, rhythms, and time signatures are all kept. I haven't been able to find anything to the contrary, so it's likely this book was arranged by the composer himself. This is not a watered-down version, and so is NOT going to be suited for less-experienced pianists. (I'm looking at a piece with 6 flats, and there's another in 7/4 time... you get the idea) However, skimming through this I can tell that each of these pieces is totally playable if you're good enough or work hard enough.

However, I sincerely wish more piano adaptations of game/movie soundtracks were this accurate. I don't care that it's challenging. Heck, I'm thoroughly excited! If you like the original music, then you'll LOVE the opportunity to play them as you hear them, and will, with significant practice and discipline, learn a lot along the way.

I am by no means a pianist. I'm self-taught and have learned to play a small handful of what you might call intermediate-level pieces. This book has challenging parts, that's for sure, and I'll have to work up to them, but there is a good variety of difficulties present. At the moment, I'm just picking my way through the easier sections (there're plenty enough) and still getting to hear solid chunks of phrases that I totally recognize from the game. Eventually, I'll pick the song that seems the most reachable and do what I've done with all the other songs I've learned: practice and persevere! Someday I'll be able to play the whole book.

On another note, I would love to see a beginner-level book of this music. So many kids play this game, and if it gets a kid (or enthusiastic adult) actually wanting to learn the piano, then I'm all for it. I know a fair number of kids (mum teaches beginner-level piano) that would be all for it. She can't wait to show them this book, even if at the moment it will be just an incentive to keep learning. She may even water sections down herself, break it into a duet, etc. They'd love it.

Intermediate to Advanced Mood Music

Purchased for my teen daughters who have been playing piano for 8 years. As a point of reference they are on level four of the Faber method books and are accomplished on multiple instruments. They report this sheet music is definitely not for a beginner. My eldest could immediately play a number of them, some of them required a little noodling through. She says the key signatures of a number of the pieces would definitely be trickier for a less experienced student, and the left hand on a few of them is particularly challenging. With that said, the music is very enjoyable. Terrific mood music at just the right level to give them a slight challenge with something new and fun. Direct quote from her, "Some of them are easy to play fingering-wise but the key signatures are so bizarre they would be confusing for a beginner. For instance one of the pieces, Minecraft, has a fingering that is almost the same throughout but the key signature has 6 sharps which is probably a bit much for a beginner."

Very advanced piano music, for at least 4th to 5th level. Bought this for my 12 year old, who is 3rd level piano player and been taking lessons for almost 4 years. He will not be able to play this for some time. Good variety of songs, but recommend for advanced player.

Liam Hoffen and Nick James are back in the next, exciting installment of Jamie McFarlane's Privateer Tales.

After fighting space pirates and rescuing a damsel in distress, nothing sounds better than shore leave at Puskar Stellar on Mars where Liam can reconnect with his girlfriend. But neither their newest crew member, Marny, nor the Mars Protectorate Navy is ready for them to spend much time relaxing.

Their old nemesis, Harry Flark, found a new mining station to pillage and the crew of Sterra's Gift has been hired to transport a covert operative into Flark’s lair. This is the perfect opportunity for them to set things right if it helps to bring him down. The big problem comes when Liam and Nick discover Flark is expecting them and has no intention of letting them get away with their lives.

Like white knights on silver steeds, Liam, Nick, Marny and a passel of new friends fight their way across the solar system, making a name for themselves and their mission.

Very good space opera

I read the first two books, and enjoyed them. This one, in my opinion, is better. By the way, don't skip the second (although) short book like one reviewer suggested. It introduces some new characters that are key to this book.
The pacing of the story reminds me at times of some of Heinlein's early YA books. These books are placed in our solar system, and the asteroid belt has been divided up between the great powers of the time. In addition to the large powers, there are lots of independent asteroid miners, and the pirates who attempt to profit from work of others.
Its all great space opera. In addition, the characters are well thought out. The main characters are young, and while they have some very good skills from growing up mining asteroids, they also have things to learn. Its adventure, coming of age, and a lot of good old fashioned blaster fire at close quarters.
A lof of great fun, and I am waiting for the next book.

Series continues to impress.

Wow, Jamie gets a little better each time. The characters are growing into dynamic entities who you can cheer for or hiss at depending on their role in the story.

This story is almost a direct sequel to Privateer tales Book 1, with some cameos from characters in book 2. The cameos don't really add much, but the return to Liam, Nick and their ship is a definite step in the right direction for the narrative. Liam is a solid focal character and his hatred of pirates makes sense.

The action scenes are decent, but not all that special. Jamie seems to jumble the actions together until the characters aren't sure what's going on, and that means the descriptions can be a bit tangled. It's not a major problem as this story is definitely character and plot driven, but it did become noticeable.

Overall, this is the best of the series by a fairly new author. The strong characters and interesting plot make for an enjoyable and quick read. My only major complaint would be the intelligence of many of the characters. This story is filled with intrigue and backstabbing, but most of the characters blunder into multiple situations without proper preparation.

Great space opera!

This is the best space opera I've read in many years, and I've been reading science fiction for 50 years. I agree with the preceding reviewer about the similarly to Heinlein's early works. "Parley" is a terrific book, as is its predecessor, "Rookie Privateer". When the next installment in the series comes out, I'll be first in line.

Management and Leadership for nurse administrators

It is an excellent book to prepare for the ANCC's Nurse Executive Exam.This is the only book I read and I passed the exam. The way the book is written is very simple and easy to understand. I would strongly recommend this book to all nurses in management positions.
