Fascinating Exploration of the Fox in Human Culture

Throughout Martin Wallen's book, "Fox," the author demonstrates how the fox has long been viewed by humans as an ambiguous creature living on the boundaries of civilized society. Just as a fox evades capture in the hunting field through its wit and cleverness, the fox also escapes simple definition.

Each of the six chapters reads as an individual essay. The opening chapter deals with efforts to classify the fox over time, beginning with the philosopher Aristotle, who believed foxes to be literally made of earth. Many creatures throughout the world share the name and the general appearance of "fox" - from the Arctic fox to the South American culpeo to the African fennec - but vary greatly in behavior and habitat.
Another chapter explores the fox in legend and myth in both Western and Eastern cultures. In Western thought, the fox is often a malevolent being, both trickster and thief living on the edges of society. Wallen recounts the fox in Aesop's Fables, the Reynard legend from medieval France, and early Christian and medieval depictions of the fox as the devil in disguise. The legend of the kitsune, or spirit fox, migrated to medieval Japan from China, and kitsune possess the ability to shapeshift into human form, thus crossing the boundaries between man and animal and the spirit and material worlds. Subsequent chapters deal with the topics of foxhunting, the commercial fur industry, and the metaphor of the fox in twentieth-century cinema.

In his chapter on foxhunting, Wallen traces the evolution of the sport and the way it was portrayed in English art and literature. While eighteenth century depictions emphasized the violent death of the fox, emphasis shifted over time until the pageantry and rules of the sport became more important than the actual capture and death of the animal.

Martin Wallen's carefully-crafted book gives readers an appreciation of this mysterious animal that has excited human imagination.

Excellent survey of the lives and lore of foxes

It was Wallen's fine book on foxes that introduced me to Reaktion's excellent Animal series, and I've been a huge fan ever since. This is definitely my favourite volume in the series. Well written, thoughtfully considered, and insightful. His writing style is engaging and illuminating, and he never talks down to readers--he's a careful and astute scholar, an accessible writer, and an impressive observer of both the natural world and human interactions with it. Like all books in the series, it takes up natural as well as cultural history, and Wallen manages the balance with exceptional skill. You'll never look at foxes the same way again! In fact, I was inspired to try my own hand at a volume in the series as a result of Wallen's contribution, so I'm particularly grateful for the inspiration of *Fox*.

Some readers have been a bit put off by a couple of the graphic photos (even though there are over 100 images in the book), but I think it's a shame to dismiss this fine and engaging study for those reasons. Yes, there are two gruesome images, but the reality is that in addition to inspiring much beautiful art and spiritual beliefs, foxes also suffer terrible abuse at the hands of humans--that's part of the context that Wallen writes about. We can't understand foxes or their symbolism without also understanding the terrible price they pay for being so fascinating to humans. I get squeamish at these images, too, but they represent a powerful truth, and we owe it to the animal and to ourselves to face these things directly.

A well-informed and well-written book that avoids Disney-esque simplicity and takes up the full complexity of these marvellous animals. Highly recommended!

You'll never be outfoxed again.

This is the "Animal" series formula, mixing some natural history, culture, legend, the arts, and exploitation of the animal, engagingly written and excellently illustrated. The formula works again, and I must like it because I have read dozens of books in the series.

Perhaps the most interesting chapter is on fox hunting, one that gives some history of the hunt and its current status. The chapters are The Fox in Nature; Vulpine Myth, Folk Tales and Allegory; The Linguistic Fox; Fox Hunters; The Commercial Fox; 20th Century Fox and the Cinema. These cover evolution and natural history, distinguish the separate varieties of fox (21 species!), the fox as pest, as fable (as in The Fox and the Grapes), as hunted, as source of furs. This last is the saddest fox.

It's easy to forget the cultural fox, but remember phrases such as foxy lady, the old fox, to outfox someone and many others.

Mediocre Book on Medieval Myths

This book was the only text used in my Medievial Myth class, and while I was at first very excited to read this compilation it soon became a burden. Goodrich has lofty aims - to bring the origional texts to the reader in her own way with a minimum of abridgement and interference. Unfortuntally the text through the whole book is just confusing. The stroy of Peredur, a distant begening of the Aurthur Legends, is so disjointed as to be unreadable. Stories are also in modern language and story form, so although Beowulf was originally a poem, it is not in this translation. It was very dissapointing to have such high hopes for a valid littery work only to be left confused by the translated text. A better work is H.A. Guerber's Middle Ages from the Myths and Legends Collection. At least that work mixes coherent modern story with noted original translation to bring home the point.

Making a mockery of medieval myths

I am a professor of medieval literature, and have to say as a professional, that this book is just plain awful. It reduces huge epic stories, most originally composed in poetic form, to brief prose tales. Goodrich's word choices are poor, as are her deciions about which selections to "keep" and which ones to delete. Even seemingly small changes cause students problems in years to come. For instance, instead of using the standard English name for the great Frankish king (it is a translation, after all), that is Charlemagne, she translates the name awkwardly as "Carlemagne." Similarly, Roland is "Rollanz," Gueres is "Guenes," etc. These odd spelling choices make research difficult for students. Unfortunately, this book is completely worthless, and may even do damage if people read it and learn to hate medieval literature.

This book is overrated.

Even though there were some interesting points in this book, it really just put me to sleep. Overall, this book is boring, and I couldn't even finish it. I'm sure there are some more interesting books about medieval myths that I would suggest people read. I gave this book a 2 star because 1 star means that I through it away.

Expand your repertoire

I'm an intermediate finger picker and I bought this book to learn a few more songs. There are 15 arangemets ranging from country, piedmont, Texas, delta and slide in standard and open tunings.It contains some easy songs that I could play almost immediately and some more challenging ones that I'm still working on. The CD was very helpful as it has each song played twice: once full speed with sung lyrics and once slowed down so you can work out what's happening.

If your thumb can already do its own thing without you having to tell it, then this book is a bargain at only 10 bucks. If your thumb is still connected to your brain, then buy beginning fingerstyle blues by Arnie Bearle and Mark Galbo first.

The funnest material to play at this level

The one negative review is what prompted me to write about this book. And it's not that I disagree with what it said, it's just that this is what the book is and I like it.

He is correct that it's beginners stuff, and songs "in the style" of the blues masters. That's true, but that suits me just fine. I had worked through Arnie Berle's "Beginning Fingerstyle Blues Guitar Book" and used this book to find some songs to apply that to, and to learn a few things. It really fit the bill, these songs were really fun to play.

As S.Newman said, this book contains tabs for a range of musical styles - mostly in the country blues vein - at a range of difficulties. I'm a (very) rank beginner, and there's a couple of pieces at even my level. There's no real scale of difficulty for the pieces, so you have to check 'em out yourself. There are suggestions of techniques, but this isn't really a "teaching book" per se. As stated, the CD is a useful adjunct.

One feature I truly appreciate is the biographical and musicological information Mr. James includes with each song, along with suggested recordings. I frequently find myself reading these snippets even when the song is beyond my current skills.

I read this and picked up some very helpful new insights, not just about how I interact with my child, but also about how I view myself. It's an interesting mix of down-to-earth practical tips and theoretical/psychological insights into the dynamics of parent-child relationships, all thoroughly backed up by in-depth research. It's also bang up to date with highly relevant sections on cyber-issues. For me its main strength is its light touch. It's written in a straightforward style with touches of humour and steers clear of value-judgements. The reader is led on a journey of self-discovery at the end of which you will feel set free to be the sort of parent you want to be.

You all know what you should expect in terms of content so nothing to say about it. One thing I want to mention a=is the paper quality is low,I bought Bleed-Proof Pens! so I can write my notes!Otherwise it would be a mess!

I was happy to be able to buy a soft copy and ...

I bought this book to help me with areas that I had forgotten. I was happy to be able to buy a soft copy and especially to just buy the one book I wanted instead of the entire collection. I used my laptop to read the book so that I can see the diagrams better and it helped quite a bit (significant improvement versus using my tablet). I am satisfied with the book.

Amazing Introduction to the Uke!

What a great way to get started on the ukulele. I love that the language is simple (most of us don't understand music theory) and that the bulk of your time is spent with the videos that are imbedded within the chapters. This makes it so easy to understand the concepts and provides a great visual tutor. What a great, simple way to go from zero to playing!

Great book on learning how to play the ukulele. This book teaches everything you need to know to get started on the ukulele and the videos are an awesome added bonus. The videos make me feel like I am taking a personal class with Andrew. This is my second book I got from Andrew Mccormick and I am looking forward to more.

This is the second ukulele instructional book that we have purchased by Andrew McCormick. My son has been playing ukulele for a little over a year. We have tried several ukulele books for beginners, etc. These are BY FAR the best out there. Easy, fun, and songs you actually want to play!
