read this alongside Fenton Bresler
By alan
So I just finished John Lennon: Life, Times & Assassination by the Brit Phil Strongman (published by Bluecoat Press, available on Amazon and, I'm sure, elsewhere). My overall impression: this is a fine piece of work and deserves to be widely read. It places Lennon in the global historic context viewed through the lens of anti-imperialism, weaving Lennon, and Chapman, into a chronologic narrative, well-told by Strongman, who takes us from FDR to today, giving Central America its due along the way. Readers of my blog [...] know that this latter is my main motor: I am convinced that John Lennon died to advance Uncle Sam's murderous counterrevolutionary wars in Central America greenlighted by Reagan's election. Phil Strongman has made a major contribution.

Fenton Bresler's Who Killed John Lennon remains the single most important contribution to our knowledge of John's murder, including as it does the evidence unearthed by Bresler's investigation, to date still the most comprehensive we have. But there's plenty in this book to dig into, including some material about Chapman and the assassination that I haven't seen elsewhere.

First, Strongman recognizes the depth of murderous depravity of the Central America wars. "With Reagan's election now in the bag, both the CIA's hawks, and the Latin American police states they supported, decided they were virtually untouchable... During 1981 the US sent the Salvadoran government $30 million as that regime presided over the deaths of another 10,000 of its own civilians, including woman and children, most of them murdered by the Salvadoran military or this death squads." Strongman definitely gets the connection and gives it its due.

Second, Strongman brings in the other high-profile assassinations of the Sixties and beyond: JFK, Malcolm X, RFK, MLK, the attempts on George Wallace and Reagan, others in Mexico and Rome. In fact, he devotes more pages to these executions than to Lennon's (I think...I didn't really count). And his compilation of connections amongst the "illicit establishment" and "alleged assassins" is impressive. When I first read Bresler's book (~1995) and had my epiphany that John had been taken from us because of Central America, I avoided the context of this history of political murders in Amerikkka. I wanted to focus on the specifics of Lennon and Chapman - why it makes so much sense that the Permanent Government would want John out of the way as they cleared the decks for slaughter in Central America, and all of the facts about Chapman's life that were just too inconvenient to fit the "deranged fan lone nut" cover story. It was, and is, a compelling case. But I also realize that of course this narrative means there is a CIA assassination force aided by their MK-ULTRA programmed-assassin project, and if one accepts the argument that they killed John Lennon, then one also has to accept the likelihood that they were behind other executions, and attempts. I didn't want to distract people with the ocean of material about e.g. the JFK assassination, into which one can easily submerge and never come up. But Strongman has done us all a service by embedding John in the sweep of this history, beginning with the natural sympathies of some domestic rightist elements (including some in the military) for European and Japanese fascism in the 30s, 40s, and beyond, and their successful importation (via Operation Paperclip) of Nazi technical experts and other war criminals (e.g. Martin Bormann) into the homeland (or to various allied subfascist countries) for the twin purposes of "loot and anti-Communism" as Strongman nicely summarizes. He takes us through the establishment of the OSS and its evolution into the CIA; the CIA's competitive relationship with J. Edgar Hoover's FBI; and the trump card held by the CIA: photos of Hoover in flagrante delicto with his longtime gay lover Clyde Tolson (not "Colson" - p25) - which enabled the CIA to poach on the FBI's turf - the USofA - supposedly prohibited by the CIA's founding charter. This enabled the CIA to "infiltrate every post-war industry, even those connected with the Arts." He reminds us that it was British military/intelligence, in Malaya, that first deployed the "hearts and minds" counterinsurgency strategy. He gives the RFK assassination appropriate attention, including acknowledging what I consider a smoking gun Herbert Spiegel, the Columbia psychiatrist and author of one of the standard texts of clinical hypnosis, concluding that Sirhan was hypnotically programmed to shoot RFK. I've said this repeatedly, so return visitors please excuse me, but I'm saying it again: if you haven't yet, see the film RFK Must Die, available on DVD, and listen to Spiegel make the case for the creation of a "programmed assassin".

Third, Strongman makes a number of points that I've never heard before, and haven't fact-checked. I do wish that he'd cited his sources as he made each of these assertions, rather than just having a list of references at the end... they could well all be accurate, but in any case, here they are:

* elements of the US military plotted to assassinate FDR in 1934 in a coup d'etat but were foiled by loyalists

* the CIA, by infiltrating its assets throughout the art scene in the US, succeeded in promoting the ascendancy of artists whose work would never challenge the real-world status quo, e.g. Jackson Pollack, Andy Warhol - and in fact, much of the pop and op art of the 50s and 60s, funding the "strong new tradition that increasingly demanded that "art" could be literally anything - from a blank canvas to a shiny cartoon to an unmade bed - as long as it was without practicality, meaning, or politics..."

* lots of stuff about the JFK assassination. That Frank Sturgis confessed to being one of the shooters; that Jack Ruby had worked for Richard Nixon; that Ruby and Lee Harvey Oswald had been "bedmates"; that part of Oswald's set-up as the patsy involved hypnosis

* a record executive offered to arrange the murder of a girl dating one of the Jackson Five so that wouldn't affect their image

* Mae Brussell thought the Manson murders were part of Operation CHAOS, Hoover's plan for the FBI and CIA to collaborate on dividing the New Left.

* there exists an FBI memo regarding the John Sinclair Freedom Rally of 10 December 1971 which "shows a strange fascination with the event's security"

* E. Howard Hunt refused a request from Nixon aide Charles Colson to break into Arthur Bremer's house after Bremer had attempted to assassinate George Wallace. Later that year Hunt's wife was on a plane that exploded on the approach to Chicago.

* in NYC 1976 or 77 "Lennon first started to dream about a stranger who asked for an album to be autographed then returned, later, angry and with a loaded gun".

* Chapman speaks Russian (p211)? I'd not seen that mentioned anywhere. Is it true?

* chills are a sign of deep hypnosis (p215)

* "thirty years later, Dr. Dorothy Lewis...examined Mark David Chapman and declared her belief that he might have been acting in response to a 'command hallucination' the day John Lennon was killed."

Importantly, Strongman asserts that Chapman was not a big Beatles or Lennon fan. This is also what Bresler says in his landmark investigation. But according to Jack Jones, whose Let Me Take You Down is based on the most extensive set of interviews of Chapman at Attica: as a child Chapman "would sit, sometimes for hours, playing Meet the Beatles, his only rock music album, while rocking back and forth..."(pp97-98). Jones also quotes Jan Reeves, the sister of Dana Reeves (the Georgia state cop who gave Chapman the hollowpoints he was to fire at Lennon): "I had a big collection of Beatles albums and he told me one time he didn't like them anymore because John Lennon had said that they were more popular than God." (pp117-118). I wish that Strongman had mentioned this history, if only for completeness.

And some Chapman material I've not seen before, including Chapman's playing audio tapes of the gunfire he'd recorded in Beirut in June 1975 to his friends "after he and the other YMCA visitors were pulled out." The only place I've seen that mentioned is the post by a visitor to this site, who regarded this a sign of Chapman's being an enthusiast for violence (Phil, is that where you got this bit?). Also, that Beirut at that time was "said to have been the home of the CIA's top secret assassination training" as was/is Hawaii. He also notes that the source of funding of Chapman's travels has never been identified -- Bresler says that Chapman's wife fronted his plane fares to and from NYC, but that doesn't include his travels prior to his marriage, e.g. his first trip to Hawaii in January 1977, when on arrival in Honolulu, he checked into the expensive Moana Hotel, according to Strongman, "money again seemingly no object." After a year of dead-end jobs, Chapman is admitted to the psychiatric unit of Castle Memorial Hospital after an alleged suicide attempt, then, as Strongman points out, he joins the unit staff in what appear to be "this incredible transition, from psychiatric patient to psychiatric staffer, within weeks." In July 1978 he begins his world tour, and on his return gets over 1200 Kodachrome slides processed; again, with funds from a yet-unidentified source. Strongman notes that the born-again Chapman somehow gets himself sent to the Middle East in 1975 but fails to visit the Holy Land, and to compensate for this apparent oversight in his handling, at the end of his world trip, "Chapman squeezed in a couple of days in Israel and there he gave a couple of the Holy Sites a cursory glance." I wish Strongman had documented these statements - maybe they're in the references he cites at the end. Also, "his October 1980 postcard to an Italian friend that spoke of New York and a 'mission', was later returned to the USA as undeliverable. When it finally arrived the original posting date had been changed to 1981 and the word 'mission' had been carefully removed." Again, I'd really like to know the source for this.

I have a couple minor quibbles to air, some political, some factual, some really trivial:

* I was surprised that in his review of the CIA's MK-ULTRA program of mind control, Strongman refers (p35) to CIA biochemist Frank Olson's having "leapt from a ninth-floor hotel window to his death" after being unwittingly dosed with LSD. The evidence is pretty potent that Olson was thrown through that window to prevent his talking about MK-ULTRA. His son, for one, is convinced of this and is devoting his life to re-opening the case and getting some justice for his father's murder - see his website [...] see also A Terrible Mistake: the Murder of Frank Olson and the CIA's Secret Cold War Experiments by H.P. Albarelli Jr and Dead Silence: Fear and Terror on the Anthrax Trail by Bob Coen and Eric Nadler.

* on p199, Strongman notes that on 2 December 1980, the same day the four U.S. churchwomen are raped and murdered by the Salvadoran military, Chapman boards a flight from Honolulu to Chicago and "although he has a grandmother in Chicago it's extremely unlikely that the armed Chapman really spends three days and nights alone with her." Regardless of how likely that may or may not be, Fenton Bresler, who made the discovery of the doctored plane tickets, also uncovered evidence that Chapman likely had flown to Chicago with his grandmother to bring her home after a visit, and thus had no intention of going on to NYC until he was re-oriented by his handlers during this 3-day layover.

* Strongman refers to Vietnamese "Troskyites"...this term has historically been used primarily by those virulently opposed to Trotsky and his adherents, primarily Stalinists (e.g. the "Trotskyite-Zinovievite Terrorist Centre" of the Moscow trials of 1936). The precise, and preferred, term is "Trotskyist".

* southern Vietnam's National Liberation Front (NLF) never referred to itself as the "Viet Cong" - that was the term chosen by the invader (Uncle Sam), and so using it unconsciously represents a choice for the imperialist telling of history.

* Candlestick Park is not "some 4,000 miles" from Liverpool (p 109); it's more like 5400 (OK that really is trivial, but I think if you're writing a book that's, uh, gonna be controversial, it's best to fact-check everything great and small).

* Less trivial is this (p117) "By 1 February 1968, over 1,400 troops had been killed or wounded [in Vietnam]" -- I'm sure this was a typo, since it was more like 16,250 killed (not counting wounded) by 1968.

* on p137, a telex from J. Edgar Hoover to Special Agents in Charge in NYC and LA reads "While Lennon and the Harrisons have shown propensity [sic] to become involved in violent antiwar demonstrations" But there must be a typo (like, he meant "...have shown no propensity...") since on the same page is this: "And even the airtel admits that neither Lennon nor the Harrisons had shown any 'propensity to become involved in violent antiwar demonstrations'"

typos:
p176: "Madison Square Gardens"
p226: "Charlie Mansion's"
p257: "The fact that Chapman avoided the publicity..." repeats

Finally, Strongman concludes that "I am now as convinced as any human being can be that elements of both the FBI and the CIA were undoubtedly behind a 'cover-up' in December 1980." Phil, man, I'm with ya, and if you're reading this, well I really really like your book. I hope you take the above as suggestions as constructive criticism for tuning up the second edition...and while you're at it, maybe you could add an index?

Shadow Of A Black Kingdom
By Albert Doyle
Strongman attempts something very similar to what James Douglass does in his book 'JFK And The Unspeakable' by intermixing the full background of covert agency history and political influence with Lennon and his life. By doing this Strongman reveals an unseen perspective to Lennon's assassination never before seen in this exact context. The book is effective in showing how corrupted media coverage has failed to inform the public of the greater body of evidence surrounding Lennon's murder and how this inadequate coverage has allowed incriminating evidence to go unseen. Strongman steps back and puts Lennon's assassination into greater context by juxtaposing the evolution of western state security organizations, their politics, and methods with Lennon's own personal and political evolution, showing how the two influence and interact with each other.

The book's strength comes from the fact it deals with the conspiracy to kill Lennon in such a way that defeats the limited view created by state-controlled media sources by going out and documenting the covert doings of those agencies and establishing a precedent for their worst offenses. Strongman makes it impossible to ignore this precedent by discussing the evidence behind several key 1960's assassinations and their undoubtable relationship to those covert agencies. Once the readers are shown there's good reason to believe JFK, Malcolm X, MLK, and RFK were all killed by means of diabolical covert conspiracies it becomes more difficult to see Lennon's death as not being related, especially when all the detailed similarities are explained. This is further enhanced by illuminating the full world of covert agency evolution in tandem with Lennon's life. The effect this achieves is to create a 3 dimensional diorama where the reader can see cross section relevancies between these infamous assassinations not available from conventional sources. What has been effectively hidden by viewing each of these incidences by the sole means of their official stories and media coverage is now seen in a whole new light thanks to Strongman's fleshing-out of their true dimension. And when the previously segregated esoteric clues are assembled in correct context a hauntingly scary pattern of similarity occurs between all these assassinations and the motives for them, including Lennon's. Suddenly the link between all these assassinations becomes clear like a zodiac of constellations appearing in the same black night sky of covert murder.

'John Lennon Life, Times, & Assassination' shows how right-wing powers tried to counter the humanitarian liberalism of FDR. These powers coalesced during the cauldron of WWII into the OSS and later the CIA. The assembly of the people into one giant war power allowed these agencies to finally act on political purposes that were previously restricted by government form. Increasing this power under the dire pretext of the Cold War, CIA had become a separate power practicing political eugenics in the background with rules that allowed them to do so secretly. Advances in mechanized culture had allowed a departmentalization of society where social tasks were left to increasingly separate entities. While the people assumed CIA was acting in their best interests they were bascially left alone and took full advantage. This WWII mentality of all assembled under one military government was extended into the Cold War with CIA being the main, invisible controlling body. Strongman shows how this growing covert power and Lennon were headed on a collision course that eventually resulted in Lennon showing-up on CIA and FBI radar for his anti-war activities. Mixed in with this is a well-constructed case for the evidence of covert involvement in those famous 60's assassinations. When you compare how Lennon existed within this covert profile it becomes impossible to separate his assassination out from the others. Especially when key clues shown in FBI and CIA's own files conform to other incriminating clues that give away their involvement. While doing this Strongman parallels how post-colonial decline was forcing covert agencies into increasingly drastic actions to combat communism that led to seeing peace activists as threats to the state and reacting with assassination. This finally culminates in a deft presentation of all the similar symptoms of mind control hypnosis between Lee Harvey Oswald, Sirhan Sirhan, and Chapman, as well as other subtle clues. So, in the end, when the full body of evidence is presented, including all these shielded histories and clues, it becomes more than obvious CIA assassinated Lennon, as Strongman concludes.

I have to thank Strongman because he's the only published source I've seen who mentions that Jimi Hendrix's death also strongly conforms to this pattern and that the claim he was murdered by his manager for money might be a limited hang-out for a more sinister covert murder of the type shown in his book.

Excellent Read
By Bob Wilson
This is an excellent and informative read. The author fills in a part of the story that has largely gone unexamined in the media. It is a bold and well researched volume of work.

Buy, Outfit, Sail: How To Inexpensively and Safely Buy, Outfit, and Sail a Small Vessel Around the World, by Capn Fatty Goodlander

Overview: The primary aim is to assist the frugal, safety-conscious sailor in the purchase and repair of a modest sailboat capable of circumnavigating. The core premise: there is little correlation between dollars spent and pleasure received when it comes to cruising offshore. Cheaper boats can be far more seaworthy than their expensive counterparts if the skipper’s money is spent wisely. It is also a practical step-by-step guide to circumnavigating inexpensively—written by a freedom-loving sailor who has sailed twice around the world on a $3,000 salvaged boat. What equipment do you really to sail offshore? How can you acquire much of this gear for free or inexpensively? What items are cheap where? How can you earn "freedom chips" as you cruise? Which routes are best? What common cruising gear do you NOT need? Why? Buy, Outfit, and Sail even points out the advantages of being on a tight budget: more friends, sharing, destinations, time, culture, freedom, fun, camaraderie, parties, and a clearer cruising focus. In addition, it opens up a completely new, fresh “sea gypsy” world to the landlubber—a wonderful, wacky, watery world of international brotherhood upon the high seas. Of special interest is the unusual, non-PC section on earning-as-you-go. The book is divided into three main sections: How-to buy a boat for peanuts, How-to safely outfit that vessel cheaply, and How-to happily sail around the world on a handful of pennies. The focus is on simple, effective, practical, inexpensive solutions that allow the sailor-on-a-shoestring to have twice the fun on half the money. The dream of leisurely sailing around the world is neither an impossible nor unrealistic one. Dozens of sailors escape to paradise every day. Why not you?

About the Author
Cap’n Fatty Goodlander grew up aboard the 52-foot John G. Alden schooner “Elizabeth,” built in 1924. He salvaged, repaired, and skippered his first boat—a holed 16-foot rowing skiff he discovered awash in St. Petersburg, Florida—at eight years of age. At 15, he purchased ($200) the derelict 1932 Atkin-designed double-ender “Corina” in Chicago—aboard which he eloped with his wife Carolyn in 1970. At 19 years of age, he began building “Carlotta,” their 36-foot, 20,000 pound Endurance ketch in Boston. In 1989, at age 37, he salvaged his $3,000 Hughes 38 “Wild Card” after Hurricane Hugo—a heavily damaged vessel, which he and Carolyn then sailed twice around the world while raising their daughter Roma Orion. Cap’n Fatty has written ten marine-related books (see www.fattygoodlander.com) and is now on his 52nd year of living aboard. He is currently the editor-at-large of Cruising World magazine, and recently had a series of radio spots on NPR. He and his wife Carolyn are, as this publication goes to press, leisurely cruising the Mediterranean Sea while continuing to trade words-for-money.

A cruising book for the rest of us
By Aubey
I just read this book, practically in one sitting, and I enjoyed it immensely. Fatty Goodlander gives the average guy hope that he can live the cruising dream without winning the lotto. The book is straight forward, entertaining and, at times, brutally honest. I have read a number of books on cruising and what you need to cast off, but this book provides a recipe for putting it all together. If like me, sailing over the horizon is your dream, I recommend you give this book a read.

Fatty's Best Yet
By sailorpat
I bought this book because I have enjoyed Fatty's other books, I have lived aboard and cruised on various boats for most of my life and wasn't expecting to get more then some laughs out of it but, not so. It is a fun read of course but it is full of great tips and ideas on maintenance. Things that would work on a gold plater too, our boat isn't that but we like to keep her looking good and thanks to Fatty we have a few short cuts. We got a few ideas on off shore preparation that we probably should have been doing all along too!!
I'm not sharing those tips in my review. I am sure that the crew of Wild Card needs to sell books to add to the cruising kitty so shell out the cash, you won't be sorry!

Ambitious Novel With Unforgettable Main Character
By A Customer
Till Human Voices Wake Us is an absorbing, entertaining novel with an unforgettable central character, crisp dialogue, and a wealth of ideas. It is the story of a self-described "marginal man in a menial job" who finds a letter in a Manhattan townhouse that he believes contains proof of a plot to overthrow the government. Is the letter real or just a figment of his imagination? Should he take some action to thwart the plot or just do nothing? Will anything he does to save his country be enough to also help him save himself? These questions are among those he continually asks himself as he chooses what to do next. This psychological novel, which is set in New York City on the eve of a Presidential election, delves deeply into some timely political and cultural questions, yet leaves it up to the reader to decide whether Jeremiah, the central character, is destined to become a hero who saves his country or a terrorist who, after blowing up the Museum of Modern Art, plunges the country into civil war. Till Human Voices Wake Us is also the story of a tragic love triangle, the story of a fall and an attempt at redemption, and the story of a son trying to live up to the memory of a murdered father. The author's use of journals, letters, poems, and interviews in this novel of conflicting voices with contradictory viewpoints is quite impressive. By the time I reached the ambiguous final line of the novel, I did not know who was telling the truth or who was acting, although given what had transpired, it seemed altogether fitting that it ended at midnight on Halloween in the same place where it began. To sum up, this is an ambitious, finely-written novel that works on many levels and is one that I strongly recommend.

Absorbing Provocative Novel
By A Customer
This is a well-crafted novel that examines two weeks in the life of Jeremiah Augustine,a down-and-out messenger in a corporate law firm. Full of guilt, regret, and despair, this once-promising Ivy League graduate still has dreams of one day playing a great role in history. He thinks that his chance has come when he goes out on a delivery and finds a letter which suggests that a conspiracy exists to overthrow the government. What follows is one man's reluctant and sometimes pathetic attempt to become a hero, to redeem himself, and to rise to the level of his murdered father. What this novel says about self-betrayal, role-playing, destructive relationships, and the pervasiveness of lying in everyday life, through its memorable scenes and pungent dialogue, leaves the reader wondering who is honest and what is real right to the very end. The book begins and ends with Jeremiah sitting in his furnished room watching TV, but whether he is the same person on the last page as he was on the first is more or less left to the reader to decide. A hero, a fool, a villain, a madman- from the evidence offered and the situations described, a case can be made for his being any one of these. I think that he succeeded in saving his life and went out and became the hero that he dreamed all his life of becoming. Till Human Voices Wake Us is an absorbing, provocative novel that I enjoyed very much and will someday read again.

The Children of Willesden Lane: Beyond the Kindertransport: A Memoir of Music, Love, and Survival, by Mona Golabek, Lee Cohen

Based on the true story of her mother, Mona Golabek describes the inspirational story of Lisa Jura Golabek's escape from Nazi-controlled Austria to England on the famed Kindertransport. Jewish musical prodigy Lisa Jura has a wonderful life in Vienna. But when the Nazis start closing in on the city, life changes irreversibly. Although he has three daughters, Lisa's father is only able to secure one berth on the Kindertransport. The family decides to send Lisa to London so that she may pursue her dreams of a career as a concert pianist. Separated from her beloved family, Lisa bravely endures the trip and a disastrous posting outside London before finding her way to the Willesden Lane Orphanage. It is in this orphanage that Lisa's story truly comes to life. Her music inspires the other orphanage children, and they, in turn, cheer her on in her efforts to make good on her promise to her family to realize her musical potential. Through hard work and sheer pluck, Lisa wins a scholarship to study piano at the Royal Academy. As she supports herself and studies, she makes a new life for herself and dreams of reconnecting with the family she was forced to leave behind. The resulting tale delivers a message of the power of music to uplift the human spirit and to grant the individual soul endurance, patience, and peace.

From Publishers Weekly
One of 10,000 Jewish children sent to England by fearful parents at the dawn of WWII, aspiring pianist Lisa Jura was 14 when her family put her on a Kindertransport train in Vienna. In this alternately heart-wrenching and uplifting story, Jura's daughter, Golabek, a pianist, and writer Cohen trace the six years Jura spent in London, where she found surrogate families in the 31 other young refugees at the Willesden Lane hostel, and in the working-class British women at the East End garment factory that employed her. The authors beautifully capture Jura's passion for music and her determination to realize her dream of becoming a concert pianist. Her quest to win a scholarship to the Royal Academy of Music seems to inject hope into everyone with whom she comes into contact: the hostel owner provides her with a piano and practice time, her housemates band together to drill her on technique and theory, and a co-worker makes her an audition outfit. Yet this is no Babes in Arms. Jura's struggle to hold herself together on the trip to England and as she makes a life for herself without the guidance of her beloved mother is as bleak as her musical successes are joyful. And the depictions of V-Day are especially vivid: rather than celebrate with the masses, Jura retreats to the hostel. The war may be over, but for her and her fellow young refugees waiting to learn the fate of their families, the tragedy will continue.

More appropriate for teenagers than adults
By Wingding
While the book is a moving tribute to Ms. Golabek's mother's dedication and tenacity under extraordinarily difficult circumstances, as a reader of history, I found the book to be disappointing, a chronological series of anecdotes about the horrible treatment of her mother's family in Vienna under the Nazis, the KinderTransport program and her mother's and her mother's fellow KinderTransporters' experiences as teenage refugees in England during World War II.

The book is clearly titled as a "memoir," so perhaps I should have expected the book to be exactly what it was, but I thought the level of writing and storytelling in the book, even as a memoir, were appropriate for sixth to twelfth graders, and not adults. Since Ms. Golabek spends a lot of time educating children about the Holocaust through her foundation, perhaps this book was written for a school age readership and I highly recommend the book for this purpose.

Finally, I attended a performance of Ms. Golabek's "The Pianist of Willesden Lane" at the Berkeley Repertory Theater and it was a real tour de force. I highly recommend the play, both for Ms. Golabek's piano virtuosity and thecplay's moving and emotional tribute to Ms. Golabek's mother.

Fantastic Narration of a WWII Survival Story
By L. Cramer
I met Mona in a coffeeshop. What a sweet lady! We talked for some time about how young people (my age 22 and younger) are seeing a trend of pop culture references that make light of the Holocaust and WWII. There are few survivors left, and someone needs to tell the stories the way they should be told, the way we should remember. Mona & Lee Cohen do exactly that in this book.

They tell the heartfelt story of their mother Lisa Jura, based entirely on true stories and real people. Jura's family sent her to England as a young child on the Kindertransport, in hopes that she could use her brilliant talent as a pianist to make a life for herself. She had to leave her parents, sisters, friends, and neighbors behind. But despite her fears, loneliness, and confusion (why would the Nazis do this?), Lisa Jura always found a way to be thankful, polite, and appreciative of the good things in life.

This is more than just a survival story; it's a story about how she and the other Jewish children refugees found ways to make their lives rich and meaningful in times when life didn't seem to make sense.

This is a quick read -- in one sitting in case you get addicted, and can't put it down! -- and very uplifting. It reminds you to be thankful for what you've got, and not brood on what could have or would have been. It is not a depressing book, but it will bring tears to your eyes!

I shared this book with family and friends, and everyone loves it so much that they've asked to buy their own copies. ***** FIVE STARS

A Tale Of Inspiration and Survival
By voracious reader
Lisa Jura is a talented 14 year old living in Vienna when Hitler comes to power and invaded Austria. Her father is a simple tailor and the family lived in a working class ghetto of Vienna. They are not rich. Lisa is a talented and promising pianist who studies piano with a prominent teacher in this city of music. It is Lisa's dream to play a concert in the much loved Vienna State Opera House. The first consequence of the Nuremberg laws which discriminated harshly against the Jews was that her much loved Music professor, Dr. Isseles could no longer teach her piano. Non-Jews could no longer teach Jewish students. It was with great regret that professor Isseles has to dismiss his promising student, Lisa. Lisa returns home downtrodden. The whole neighborhood was inspired by Lisa's gift and was hopeful that she would arise from the ghetto and make something of herself. Her music loving mother was her inspiration and constant encourager. After crystalnacht, when her father was beaten, forced to undress to the waist and ordered to scrub the street, Lisa's mother recognized the danger for her family. A seat on the Kindertransport became available and was offered to the family. Rosie, who was 18 was too old. Lisa at 14 qualified and her mother sent her. With tears and sadness Lisa left her family with a small suitcase which contained a photo of her famiily and a sparkling evening bag that belonged to her grandmother. She removed the tiny gold necklace with the piano charm that she always wore and put it around the neck of her 11 year old sister, Sonia. Lisa was placed in the country home of a wealthy military officer and his much younger wife. Lisa was a servant in the house and the house did not have a piano. After 6 months of loneliness and isolation in the country, she ran away to the Jewish agency in London which then placed her in an orphanage for these children run by a Viennese matron who also fled Austria. She had camaraderie among the other children most of whom were from Germany or Austria. They all spoke German. However, the matron, Mrs. Cohen, an educated and previously wealthy Viennese matron required that only English be spoken so that the children became fluent in English, the tongue of their adopted land. Ten thousand Jewish children were saved by the English. Many of them opened their homes to these children. Not all of the homes were Jewish. The orphanage had a piano and Lisa played it beautifully and regularly. All the residents of the house were entertained by her music. She worked as a seamstress in a clothing factory during the day to earn money for her food and lodging. She was allowed to keep 25% of her earnings for personal expenses. She tried to find ways to save her family. Sonia needed a sponser and Lisa searched for one everywhere. Life was becoming desperate for Lisa's family and Sonia. Finally, she asked a quaker widow who had been charitable when a bomb damaged the orphanage and Lisa needed a place to sleep. The widow could not keep Sonia, but she found another quaker family in the country who could. Sonia was on the last train of the kindertransport before England declared war on Germany and the trains stopped running. Sonia was allowed to study in the morning and work only in the afternoon. She was lucky as most had to work all day. Mrs. Cohen recognized Lisa's talent and encouraged her to apply to the prestigious Royal Academy of Music. Lisa won a spot and a scholarship. She attended the academy, but worked mornings at the factory making supplies for the army. She sewed heavy fabric into back packs etc. Her piano teacher noticing the stress on her fingers arranged for her to have a job playing the piano in the evenings at local club where there was drinking and dancing. Lisa was an attractive girl with red hair, and all the soldiers wanted to buy her drinks and flirt with her. She only saw her sister once every 6 months because the train tickets from the countryside were expensive and Sonia could not leave her work or school very often. They lost contact with their married sister,Rosie and their parents. No one in the orphanage had contact with their parents. The Jewish agency heard the rumors about the death camps, the deportations, and the mass killings. No one wanted to believe it. The stories were so horrific that they were unblievable. Lisa graduated from the music school and the school financed her debut recital. It was heavily attended. One attendee was a French Jewish soldier,Michael Golabek, who had heard her play in the club and was impressed by her talent. After the war, Sonia and Lisa were reunited with their sister Rosie who was now wearing the chain with the piano charm. Rosie her husband Leo, and their four year old daughter, Esther survived by escaping from France into Switzerland. They all emigrated to the U.S. where Lisa again met up with Michael Golabek. Lisa and Michael married. All three sisters and their spouses moved to California. Lisa's parents were deported to Lodz and then Auschwitz where they died. Lisa's daughters and granddaughters are all talented pianists. Her daughter, Mona Golebek one of the authors is an internationally acclaimed concert pianist, the host of a classical music radio show and grammy nominated recording artist. This story was a page turner. I could not put it down. However, it was sentimental. The characters lacked dimension. They were usually good people with few negative qualities. Because of that they were not realistic. They all seemed to be kind and good, tolerant and understanding of each other. For teenagers they had relatively few issues. All but one lost their whole family. One boy had a mother who survived. These children spent their teen years in the children's home and grew to adulthood there.
