Vampire's Shade (1 of series)

I downloaded Vampire's Shade as a free book from Amazon. I had a love-hate relationship with this read. Part of it due to the cover which makes no sense with the plot-- what's with those wings and holey tights?

For some reason, Adele's personality, speech, and sayings reminded me of other young, vampire-slayer characters-- all attitude and self-reflection. I'll admit, I enjoyed the plot, and secondary characters, even if I found the protagonists unremarkable. The story was well-paced, and thoughtful. I think my dislike is the cookie-cutter heroine-- a compilation of other, similar vampire-slayers. I can't say I was too impressed with Connor, either. Nor did I ever really get a sense of the attraction between the two. Their relationship seemed contrived, rather than a natural progression of events.

There's a lot of potential here, and I'm willing to bet this is a series that will improve as the writer hits her stride with the characters.

New Editor Makes All the Difference

If I chose books based on cover photos, I'd never have downloaded Vampire's Shade. Could it be any cheesier? It looks like they're trying to hook hormonal high school boys.

This story is riddled with errors, more than I've seen in a long time, which is a real shame. I found myself constantly backtracking to try to deduce the author's meaning because of odd phrasing (ex: "It hadn't been a hell of a job, and there'd always been a little torn."), missing words and punctuation, and misused words. Clearly, this book wasn't edited before publication and it shows. Errors show up on every other page. Some people don't care about this stuff, and don't even notice it. It was a real problem for me. 2 stars as is.

For content only, Vampire's Shade deserves 3.5 stars, perhaps 4 stars. The story is involving and the characters were interesting. Parts of the plot could have been fleshed out more. We got only bare details about Connor's illegal business or why the master vampires wanted it. Since that was pivotal, more about that would have been helpful.

Neas may not be Jeaniene Frost or Laurell K. Hamilton, but her writing is very promising. I really hope she finds a good editor. I'd love to revise my review after editing.

p.s. I just looked at the listing, and amazingly, this book lists an editor. Unbelievable. They should be fired. And she should demand a refund.

ETA 6-8-16: I was just notified that this was re-edited, so I downloaded it again to take another look. What a difference a good editor makes! In the first chapter, I only noticed one misspelled word, one or two missing words, and one slightly awkward turn of phrase. Trust me, that's nothing compared to the original release. The story now has the polish it deserves, and it flows like it should. If you have the original, download the new one and compare. It's impressive.

3.5 stars, rounded up to 4, because hey, the author responded and acted. Thanks on behalf of all of us.

What's a dead vampire or two.

There were a lot of mistakes in this book and some sentences were completely baffling with wording, some words were missing or spelled wrong and it was really hard to figure out what the author meant. The story itself was very interesting and intriguing so overall I thought it was a really great book if you can overlook the mistakes. I hope that someone proof reads the next book as I think Vivienne Neas has a talent for writing. I always give first time writers second chances especially when I see greatness to entertain readers like this author.

About the Author
Alan Parisse During his twenty year career in the investment business, Alan Parisse gained extensive experience in both the investment banking and distribution and sales sides of the business. Over the last decade he has become a renowned speaker and commentator on dealing with change and turbulent times. In December of 1999, Successful Meetings Magazine named him one of the "Top 21 Speakers for the 21st Century". He is also the only person to come out of the investment business to be inducted into the National Speaker's Association Hall of Fame. Alan received his BS from SUNY Buffalo and his MBA from the University of Arizona. He resides in Boulder, Colorado.

David Richman has been in the investment business for over twenty years. He has extensive experience in marketing and sales and has been a senior member of the sales team for the oldest independent provider of managed money consulting services in the country. He is a friend and partner to scores of financial advisors who have leveraged his skills through thousands of seminars and joint calls with affluent investors. David is a member of the Connecticut Bar and has sat on numerous civic boards over his career. He holds a BA and MA from the University of Rochester and a JD from the University of Connecticut. Questions will make an investor think

I was given a copy of the book by a financial advisor. Her only comment to me was to look it over if I had a moment. I can't say that I related to everything in the book as it's written from the perspective of the advisor. But, I can say that after reading it I changed the way I looked at my financial person and how he related to me. Some of the things I thought? Why didn't I feel he had a personal relationship with me? Why didn't I believe he was interested in me and how I related to money? After some soul-searching and interviewing a few advisors, I have a new money manager--and I like her approach a lot. In fact, I've decided to put my grandchildren's trust funds with her as well.

Great book very helpful

This is a great example of how to develop deep relationships with your clients. The sincerity and quality of the questions are what really matter. One of the most difficult issues we deal with is how to put together a plan for our clients, without their open and honest communication the job can be left incomplete. This book will help you in asking those questions.

This book has been a great reference for myself, and reinforces some of my core ideals, including how to create a customer base that not only trusts you, but works for you because you can convey to them that you actually DO care about them and their futures.

Taken together, this menagerie of people, places, and things makes up an actually existing experimentalism that is always partial, compromised, and invented in its local and particular formations—in other words, these individual cases suggest that experimentalism has been a far more variegated set of practices and discourses than previously recognized. Asking new questions leads to researching new materials, new individuals, and new contexts and, eventually, to the new critical paradigms that are necessary to interpret these materials. Gathering contributions from historical musicology, enthnomusicology, history, philosophy, and cultural studies,�Tomorrow Is the Question�generates future research directions in experimental music studies by way of a productive inquiry that sustains and elaborates critical conversations.

Bought this because I wanted something different that what you can find in normal stores (plus I love herb so this was perfect)
I love the variety of pictures. Some simple and cool, some wicked detailed, some really weird, some that I can't even describe. Great variety.
Also- the pages are super thick. Like I used my gel pens and markers that love to bleed and they didn't. Im sure you could use sharpies on this and if would be okay
Anyway- I'm super happy with this purchase. Thanks for thinking of us stoners! :)

What a flashback!

This book is so much fun. Although I am a child of the 60's but no longer indulge, I can't begin to tell you how much fun I'm having with this book. This is one of my "I'm not in a serious mood and I just want to have fun with coloring". I love to use neons on these pictures. The paper is good quality and even though the markers bleed through, the pictures are one sided so it doesn't really matter. Sit back, have a glass of wine or whatever, put on some 60's and 70's music (I prefer rock and roll) and get out your neons. If you go out of the line...it's cool! Rock it baby!

I got this gift for a friend. The pages are great with a wide variety of funky. Some are simple designs to get the juices flowing and others are real meticulous for the OCD stoner. You cant rip the pages out so you know but they are only one sided so you don't have to worry about bleeding through or you can cut the pages out if you wish.

The Best Novel of 2015 -- Hands Down!

From the first page, you will be swept away by this stunning portrayal of a marriage in crisis. Like a spark that grows into a conflagration, Jess's unease about her husband Chet's behavior and words flares into flames of pain and shock as she forces herself to admit the unthinkable.

In the midst of this turmoil, Haley, their teenage daughter, is also fighting to understand herself and her place in her family and the world. Upon learning of her father's selfish betrayals, she runs away and into grave danger. Both mother and daughter abhor conflict and can't find the inner strength to stand up and speak out for what they need and the outrage they feel. But the time has come to stand and face the fire.

Jessica is so much like many women. She loves Chet. She honors her marriage and family. She doesn't want to rock the boat. But what do you do when your boat's been capsized? Jessica has tough decisions to make that will impact not only her but her daughter.

This novel is beautiful. Set in the Yosemite area, the story has layers of symbolism and metaphor. California is on fire, and while fire destroys, it also burns the underbrush to ash so that new life can sprout. Ginny Yttrup parallels the outer and interior dangers--dangers of being scorched and burned. Her characters are thrown into the crucible and face a fire that might destroy them as the landscape around them burns.

If you read only one novel this season, make it Flames.You won't avoid being scorched yourself, but you will be glad for it. There is victory and healing at the end of the journey.

Ginny Yttrup’s latest novel, Flames, deals with a tender subject, the complexities of life – seen from multiple angles and multiples generations, as the flames of infidelity burn through a family. Jessica Weaver is a fire archaeologist who preserves the effects of wildfire on all areas of life. When infidelity blazes through her family, she is forced to take a close look at the motivations of her own life choices and examine the steps that brought her to this defining moment.

The desire to preserve her family unscathed is thwarted when her teenage daughter, Haley, also discovers her father’s infidelity. She chooses to run from the problem, creating another layer of firestorm that overlies the circumstances facing her parents.

While Haley flees to the wilderness, Jessica flees to her father, and Ted, becomes the lens through which we view the perspective of the parent who shepherds and supports his daughter through a trial not unlike one he walked through in his own marriage decades earlier. The faith and grace displayed through Ted and his wife Cretia, is a poignant reflection of God’s grace and mercy to His children no matter what trial they are facing.

This is Ginny Yttrup’s first self-published novel, and it was written from a heart’s desire to help people take a long hard look at the destructive consequences of careless choices. But, more than that, it is a novel that walks through the scorched earth of the heart and finds hope and healing through the searing flames of infidelity.

The words are rich, and carefully woven together so the reader is able to feel the pain, the terror, the hopelessness and the strength that is born out of such a trial. I’ve walked this journey in my own life, and I’ll confess there were times I just snot-sobbed over my book and had to lay it down and physically grieve through the pain of my own life circumstances. But, once on the other side of this novel, I felt stronger and more purposeful about my future than I’ve felt in years! SUCH HEALING was found in the pages of this novel for me!! This is a story birthed in love, and I am certain many lives will be saved and changed through reading this novel!

Good Story, but Frustrating to Read

"Flames" by Ginny L. Ytrrup

Okay, I confess, ...I've liked Ginny Ytrrup ever since I read "Words". I became a huge fan and devoured her novels as soon as I could. I enjoyed "Invisible", too, but not as much as "Words". Still.... For all that devotion, you'll notice that I only gave this novel 4-stars. I had thoughts of rating it only 3-stars. Why?

Ginny Ytrrup seems to be hung up on writing in the first-person. And worse, she has several characters narrating their own parts of the story. Several characters, writing in the first-person, in various parts of the story, makes the story difficult for an easy, enjoyable experience. A first-person account, from only one perspective, is okay, though I'm not a big fan. But from three or more characters? Yes, I followed the story, but it was frustrating. Because of the switch of which-person-narrative, the story didn't flow well as it should have.

"Flames" ultimately was a good, entertaining novel. But while reading it, there was a underlying frustration, a nagging feeling, that I did not overly enjoy. If you can read first-person narratives, from several differing points of view, you might enjoy it. I hope you do. I want the author to be encouraged to continue to write. But I also hope she reads this review and understands my objections to the narrative style.
