Chemistry textbook
By Midori
This book was required for my Chemistry class. I found it to be very confusing. I don't know if it's because I'm just not a fan of Chemistry or what, but I often felt lost in this book and had to re-read several parts to make sense of it. The book is very informative, but for some parts, the text is just difficult to interpret, especially if you take the course online like I did and don't have direct access to your professor.

Education (Whitechapel: Documents of Contemporary Art)From Allen, Felicity (EDT)

This book will be an original and indispensable resource for all who believe in the importance of art in the wider educational realm. Framing the recent "educational turn" in the arts within a broad historical and social context, this anthology raises fundamental questions about how and what should be taught in an era of distributive rather than media-based practices. Among the many sources and arguments traced here is second-wave feminism, which questioned dominant notions of personal and institutional freedom as enacted through art teaching and practice. Similarly, education-based responses by the art community to the catastrophes of World War II and postcolonial conflict critically inform contemporary art confronting the interrelationships of education, power, market capitalism, and--as Michael Hardt and Antonio Negri describe it--the global condition of war. These writings by artists, philosophers, educators, poets, and activists center on three recurring and interrelated themes: the notion of "indiscipline" in theories and practices that challenge boundaries of all kinds; the present and future role of the art school; and the turn to pedagogy as medium in a diverse range of recent projects. Other writings address such issues as instrumentalism and control, liberation and equality, the production and the politics of culture, and the roots of research-based practice and experimental participatory works.

Review
"Only when you're grown up do you see the shape of the stage and which pieces of scenery were moving during your childhood and the vital episodes beyond. How we learn, what we learn and what we share take forever to grasp. The generosity of this book, a personal compendium - as much of experience as of political landscapes - is a marvellous handrail through the architecture of education." - Richard Wentworth, Artist "Felicity Allen has curated a rich and varied selection of writings on contemporary art and education that will undoubtedly be a valuable and generative resource for the field." - Wendy Woon, Edward John Noble Foundation Deputy Director for Education, Museum of Modern Art, New York "... [B]rings together a wide range of material and emphasizes the complexity of education and its relations to art practice. The inclusion of political, feminist, philosophical and narrative voices makes this an essential reader for artists, educators and those who believe in the importance an value of art in wider socio-political contexts." - Sally Tallant, Head of Programmes, Serpentine Gallery, London

The Secret Rooms
By S Riaz
Having really enjoyed the authors previous book Black Diamonds: The Rise and Fall of an English Dynasty, I was looking forward to reading her new work. The Secret Rooms is the story of how Catherine Bailey set out to do some research for a book which ended up taking a completely different direction. When the author came to Belvoir, family home of the Duke of Rutland, she was intending to write a book about the 1,700 men of the estate who left to fight in WWI. However, when she attempted to look at the correspondence catalogued by the Duke, she found that there were three gaps: one in 1894, just before his ninth birthday, the second in 1909 when he was working in Rome and the third in 1915. When she looked at his war diary, the first pages were crammed full of war progress and movements, but after July 1915, it was a blank. What follows is the author first attempting to find what happened to the missing letters and then her search for what happened during those blank periods becomes the story she wants to write.

John Henry Montagu, the 9th Duke of Rutland, was a second son. His elder brother died shortly before the first gap in his edited correspondence. He had three sisters, one of whom was Diana, later the socialite and wife of Duff Cooper. Bailey takes us methodically through her search for the truth. She asks why the Duke died in 1940, locked away in a set of rooms to which only a handful of people were admitted, at his family home Belvoir Castle? What made him spurn a more comfortable sickroom for the spartan one he chose, in order to remain there completing his work, even when he was seriously ill? What, in other words, did he have to hide?

This is a work of great research and the author involves you completely in John's life and that of his family. While I have read much about his sister Diana, I knew little about her parents. John and Diana's mother Violet was a woman who enjoyed intrigue and who never recovered from the death of her eldest child. The problem with the book is that much is conjecture and, although Bailey solves the main mystery concerning WWI, she glosses over parts of the story she is unable to solve - the section regarding John's time in Rome is quite weak compared to the rest of the book. However, I enjoyed following the authors progress as she unravelled the mystery of the missing letters, tracking down the story and uncovering long held secrets in a time when the aristocracy would do anything to present the image they wanted to show the world.

The difference between Belvoir* Castle and Downton Abbey? Belvoir's story is true! And a riveting read.
By Sharon Isch
"The Secret Rooms" takes us inside an amazing but true World War I era mystery that had been waiting all these years to be discovered and solved, behind the locked doors of the muniment rooms of Britain's Belvoir Castle, the longtime home of the Manners family and duchy of Rutland.

Enter TV writer-director-producer Catherine Bailey, who'd chosen Belvoir Castle's archives as the starting place for her research for a book about what became of the hundreds of Belvoir estate volunteers who, at their duke's urging, had gone off to France to fight World War I, and how their experiences had affected those who returned and their way of life after.

But Bailey soon found an even more compelling WWI story to research and write about. The 8th duke's son John, after the war and after he inherited the duchy, closed off the castle's muniment rooms and spent his last years locked inside those five rooms full of family history, doing something he considered urgent and private...and so important to him that, when he developed the pneumonia that would kill him, he refused to leave those cold rooms and whatever it was he was doing there. Nor would he let his own or the king's own doctor enter and try to save his life. He died there alone on an old sofa...having almost, but not quite, completed his mysterious task. After John's death in 1940, his son Charles, the 10th duke, ordered that the rooms be sealed and untouched, and so they remained until Ms. Bailey requested to see what information they could give her for her book. Soon it became clear to her WHAT John had been up to, but not WHY. Finding the answer to that would lead to the research that underpins a book the London newspapers would label "astonishing, jaw-dropping, gripping, compelling, remarkable, superb," etcetera. I agree and I suspect most readers will, too.

Interesting work of non-fiction
By Jill Meyer
Ninety-nine years have passed since the beginning of WW1, or as it was called at the time, "The Great War". Nearly a century ago, war was sparked by the assassination in Sarajevo in June, 1914, of Austrian Archduke Franz Ferdinand and his wife. Because of the tangled web of alliances, most of the nations in Europe went to war. In Great Britain and the imperial territories, hundreds of thousands of young men gaily joined up to fight for their king and country in a war that was supposed to last only a few months. Four long, dreadful years later, with the fields of France and Belgium turned into trench-laced killing fields, the war was over. An entire generation of young men and the cities and villages they had come from were starkly reminded of the toll the war had taken.

British historian Catherine Bailey has written one of the finest books on WW1 that I've read. Her new book, "The Secret Rooms" is a rather melodramatically-titled book about the Manners family - the Dukes of Rutland - and their castle "Belvoir" (pronounced "Beaver"). Bailey had intended to write a book about the Belvoir estate and the affect the war had on its thousands of tenants. However, once she got to work, perusing the war records at the castle, she stumbled upon a more interesting, more personal story. And that's the story she tells in "The Secret Rooms".

John Manners, the 9th Duke of Rutland, died in 1940 in a back part of his huge castle. He had sequestered himself in these rooms for a few months before his death at the age of 54, working frantically on his family's legacy. The British government had sent a huge number of boxes of archives to be protected from the German bombing of London, but it was not these records the Duke was interested in. He was interested in his own family's records and he tried to weed out letters and diaries that would obscure a smallish part of his own life and how it related to the lives of his parents and siblings.

But what was Rutland trying to hide, and why was he trying to hide it? In her fascinating book, Bailey takes the reader though the last 30 years or so of the 19th century and into the first half of the 20th. By looking at these years through the mysteries of the Manners family, the reader is exposed to an amazing recap of both family and societal history.

I think the sub-title of the book, "A True Gothic Mystery" might scare some potential readers away. Bailey's book is more - so much more - than a silly story. She truly tells the story of a time and a place and a family. It's a great read. If you're a WW1 buff, please put this on your list.

Review
"A tremendous contribution. . . . You won't find a more comprehensive guidebook to worship leading in contemporary contexts. Every church should have this book in their library; every pastor should lean on this resource to help understand how to work with worship leaders; and every worship leader should have this as required reading, whether they are veterans of the craft or just starting out." (WorshipMusic.com)

"Andy Park has not just written an excellent book, he has given us a rich legacy from the wealth of his experience and wisdom as a worship leader and songwriter, but most of all from the heart and understanding of a worshiper." (Graham Kendrick, Make Way Music)

"As I read this book, I remember all the times where I have seen Andy live out what he is writing about! There is a huge wealth of practical advice and trustworthy counsel here. His songs are some of my favorites ('Yet I Will Praise,' 'Blessed Be the Name,' 'Multiply Your Love,' 'One Thing I Ask'), and I'm sure he will keep blessing us with more powerful worship for as many years as the Father gives him!" (Brian Doerksen, songwriter and recording artist)

"Styles come and styles go. Through it all, the folks of the Vineyard have consistently drawn worshipers further than they have thought possible: into the very heart of God. Andy Park's To Know You More is the worship leader's intimate but practical guide to facilitating that journey." (Sally Morgenthaler, author of Worship Evangelism)

"Andy Park will always be a hero of mine, not because of the songs or acclaim but because of his humility in his lifelong quest to be God's friend. He is the genuine article, and we can all benefit from reading the real thing." (Martin Smith, lead vocalist, Delirious)

"In Paul's first letter to Timothy, he reminds him, 'Watch your life and doctrine closely' (1 Tim 4:16). And as it happens, that would be pretty good advice for anyone involved in leading worship too. Andy Park's book does just that in such a wonderful way. He reminds us of the importance of living lives of worship, gives us an insightful look at the theology of worship and, for good measure, throws in loads of helpful, practical advice on how to lead worship. I don't think I've ever read a book quite like this before. Park writes on so many different aspects of worship and does so in a refreshingly transparent way." (Matt Redman, worship leader, songwriter and author of The Unquenchable Worshipper: Coming Back to the Heart of Worship)

Outstanding Book on Worship
By Mark D. Roberts
Among the many books out there on worship, this is one of the best. Andy Park is a mature, bright, theologically-solid, and experienced worship leader. He shares with the reader the fruits of many years of faithful and inspired worship leading and song writing.
Perhaps one of the most engaging aspects of this book is Park's personal openness. As you read, you won't feel like some expert is preaching down at you, but like a wise friend has come alongside to help you become a more effective leader, for God's glory.
Park's church experience is largely in the Vineyard. His writing reflects this experience (naturally), but is also relevant to those of us who are not part of Vineyard (or Vineyard-like) churches. Park's wisdom transcends his particular denomination.
I learned many things from this book and it also touched my heart. I have been encouraged to be a stronger worship leader and, indeed, a more faithful worshiper of God.
Now that I have read this book, I am ordering several copies for friends who lead worship. They will profit richly from this book, and so will you.

Good book
By Stephen Hatfield
This book comes from a nondenominational view in my opinion. The writer and his writings seem to come from the Jesus Movement of the 60/70's (of which I was a part). It has a much needed approach in that it starts with looking at yourself as a Worship Leader first. That's refreshing.

A valuable resource for current and future worship leaders
By Gary Mull
This book has a pretty limited target audience, which makes it exceptionally useful for people in that group - people who lead worship in protestant churches. And with 17 years of experience, Andy Park is an appropriate person to write this book. We sing some of Andy's songs at my church, and I figured that anyone who wrote worship choruses that are so widely known must have something to say that's worth hearing. "To Know You More" provides a great mix of history, philosophy, and practical suggestions related to leading worship.

Throughout the book, Andy shares openly about the challenges he's faced in leading worship. These stories make this book inviting and helpful. I see that many of my insecurities and second-guesses are not so unique. Page after page, I found myself saying, "Yeah, I've been there. That's exactly how I felt." There's comfort in knowing that I'm not the only one to wonder if I'm really up to the task of trying to create an environment that enables people to have an encounter with God.

I appreciated the history of song styles that have been used in worship. I didn't realize that hymns were just as ground-breaking and controversial in their day as contemporary worship songs are in some churches today. In short, today's style of worship is culturally relevant and legitimate, even though there is and will continue to be resistance. In 50 years, church-goers may have an entirely different style, and may have the same opinions about today's worship choruses that we have about traditional hymns. That won't diminish the value of either style.

Andy writes about how to pick songs, rehearse, develop other worship leaders, and part ways when it just isn't working. He also writes about the various roles of worship leaders and song writers, who serve to varying degrees as priests, prophets, healers, teachers, and evangelists. To me, this was the best part of the book. Many people think the worship leader is like a choir director for the congregation, but there's so much more to it than that. Park defines the complete picture of what a worship leader is.

Digital Ground: Architecture, Pervasive Computing, and Environmental Knowing (MIT Press), by Malcolm McCullough

Digital Ground is an architect's response to the design challenge posed by pervasive computing. One century into the electronic age, people have become accustomed to interacting indirectly, mediated through networks. But now as digital technology becomes invisibly embedded in everyday things, even more activities become mediated, and networks extend rather than replace architecture. The young field of interaction design reflects not only how people deal with machine interfaces but also how people deal with each other in situations where interactivity has become ambient. It shifts previously utilitarian digital design concerns to a cultural level, adding notions of premise, appropriateness, and appreciation.

Malcolm McCullough offers an account of the intersections of architecture and interaction design, arguing that the ubiquitous technology does not obviate the human need for place. His concept of "digital ground" expresses an alternative to anytime-anyplace sameness in computing; he shows that context not only shapes usability but ideally becomes the subject matter of interaction design and that "environmental knowing" is a process that technology may serve and not erode.

Drawing on arguments from architecture, psychology, software engineering, and geography, writing for practicing interaction designers, pervasive computing researchers, architects, and the general reader on digital culture, McCullough gives us a theory of place for interaction design. Part I, "Expectations," explores our technological predispositions -- many of which ("situated interactions") arise from our embodiment in architectural settings. Part II, "Technologies," discusses hardware, software, and applications, including embedded technology ("bashing the desktop"), and building technology genres around life situations. Part III, "Practices," argues for design as a liberal art, seeing interactivity as a cultural -- not only technological -- challenge and a practical notion of place as essential. Part IV, "Epilogue," acknowledges the epochal changes occurring today, and argues for the role of "digital ground" in the necessary adaptation.

Review

Like it or not, our physical environment is beginning to fill with embedded and ubiquitous computing devices. Are we attending sufficiently to their design and to their effects on our lives? How will they change our traditional notions of architecture? Questions largely ignored because they are too difficult -- or too painful -- to answer are confronted head-on in McCullough's thoughtful and provocative essay.

(B.J. Novitski, Managing Editor, ArchitectureWeek)

This is one of the most thoughtful books in the emerging field of interaction design. It is well argued and solidly grounded in both the literature and experience of computing. McCullough provides a powerful explanation for why design -- and interaction design in particular -- is emerging as a liberal art of the twenty-first century. Digital Ground is important for the professional designer, the student of design, and the general public.

(Richard Buchanan, Carnegie Mellon University)

...[A] way to think about how we might intelligently respond to the computer kudzu without letting it take over the garden.

(Michael J. Crosbie Architectural Record)

In Digital Ground Malcolm McCullough elegantly summarizes the past and present relations between architecture and computing, and constructs a solid foundation for future interaction between the two fields.

(Casey Reas, Interaction Design Institute Ivrea)

Malcolm McCullough's book charts a significant, unexplored terrain confronting architects and society at large. Pervasive computing is embedded, networked, ubiquitous, and capable of not only sensing and processing, but acting as well. This new form of computing holds the potential to restructure physical space and our relation to it, and McCullough provides an articulate and readable introduction to this new world, both promising and troubling. Digital Ground is a solid, early contribution to what will quickly become an important field of study for architecture, planning, and urban design.

(Dana Cuff, Professor of Architecture, University of California, Los Angeles)

New perspectives!
By Seng W. Loke
The book digital ground presents new ideas about place and technology. I was particularly struck by the idea of technologies piling up at a place -an interesting problem is how this pile of technologies can be organized into a useful whole - device ecologies, and an extensible system (hardware and software) that can grow over time (and be subject to changes, e.g. devices removed, replaced, added, etc). Another interesting idea is how certain places fulfill or serve different aspects of life or functions, and the technology at a place should then be in accordance with the corresponding aspects of life or functions at that place, or at least be attuned to or be aware of context necessary for such functions and related activities. There are also other interesting ideas and underlying theories in the book which makes it an interesting read, and not only for architects and builders but computer scientists!

The future of interaction design
By vanderwal
This book is a wonderful look at the background and future of interaction design. McCullough provides wonderful depth of understanding for the reader on the many discipline that support interaction design: psychology, architecture, cultural anthropology, technology. Not only does McCullough draw the disciplines together nicely, it is done seamlessly to the reader.

My copy is now filled with highlighter marks and it a book I will be returning to for my profession and through time. If you are a fan of well developed end notes to find further information, this book is a charm.

Looking Forward With Feet Firmly Planted.
By Ian J. Bellomy
Malcom McCullough might be one of the wisest voices I've come across in my reading of late. His exploration of the intersection of ubiquitous computing and architecture in Digital Ground is rigorous in its details but thorough in its scope. He not only does the specific topic justice but by the end he synthesizes issues of philosophy, computation, and architecture into the most cognizant argument for sustainability I've heard to date. In general he shows how pervasive computing is not just "new" but how it throws into relief very old ideas that formed our current economic culture. In discussing contextual or situated computing, he doesn't simply provide techno-fetishistic conjecture, he dives deep into what place is, the topology of places we know and will continue to know, the qualities of a place as an assemblage of value, and how value itself is determined. While only pieces of Digital Ground bare particular relevance to my personal research his ideas have led me to invaluable lines of inquiry. I can't imagine it doing anything less for you. Reading this book is time-well-spent.

Existentialism: An Introduction, by Kevin Aho

Existentialism: An Introduction provides an accessible and scholarly introduction to the core ideas of the existentialist tradition. Kevin Aho draws on a wide range of existentialist thinkers in chapters centering on the key themes of freedom, being-in-the-world, alienation, nihilism, anxiety and authenticity. He also addresses important but often overlooked issues in the canon of existentialism, with discussions devoted to the role of embodiment, the movement’s contribution to ethics, politics, and environmental and comparative philosophies, as well as its influence on contemporary psychiatry and psychotherapy. The enduring relevance of existentialism is shown by applying existentialist ideas to contemporary philosophical discussions of interest to a wide audience. The book covers secular thinkers such as Heidegger, Merleau-Ponty, Nietzsche, Sartre, Camus, and Beauvoir as well as religious authors, such as Buber, Dostoevsky, Marcel, and Kierkegaard.

In this engaging and accessible text Aho shows why existentialism cannot be easily dismissed as a moribund or outdated movement. In the aftermath of 'God’s death', existentialist philosophy engages questions with lasting philosophical significance, questions such as 'Who am I?' and 'How should I live?' By showing how existentialism offers insight into what it means to be human, the author illuminates existentialism’s enduring value.

Existentialism: An Introduction provides the ideal introduction for upper level students and anyone interested in knowing more about one of the most vibrant and important areas of philosophy today.

Review
"Surely the best overview of the movement available today. Aho clarifies the place of existentialist philosophy in world thought, carefully and fairly examines all its major figures, and shows its relations to recent thought and movements. With his clear and energetic writing, Aho brings existentialism to life."
Charles Guignon, University of South Florida

"Historically comprehensive and philosophically acute, Kevin Aho's Existentialism is a wonderful introduction to the '-ism' that isn't, to 'the noth-ing' that burst forth in philosophy and literature like a series of coordinated attacks on existing reality, exposing the hollow core of modernity and thereby opening up our future."
Iain Thomson, University of New Mexico

Kevin Aho is Associate Professor of Philosophy at Florida Gulf Coast University.

Great read for anyone interested in Existentialism.
By Daniel Rosario
This is a comprehensive look at Existentialism's history, major figures, and contemporary relevance. Dr. Aho makes the ideas very accessible for everyone without dumbing down the concepts. He is also very effective at clarifying jargon-filled texts, so reading this is much less intimidating than jumping right into Heidegger or Kierkegaard. It also draws beautifully from the works of Camus, Dostoevsky, Sartre, and Beauvoir (among many others). I highly recommend this for anyone interested in a subject that is (arguably) more relevant now than ever.

Yes, Probably the Best Out There
By Alexander Flynt
A recent reviewer has said that this book is the best general introduction to existentialism out there. Knowing that I had been reading widely in modern Western thought, a friend brought Aho's book to my attention. After reading it thoroughly I found that I had some criticisms---and still do. Yet, when I returned to the question of whether or not it was the best introductory study out there, I had to concede that it was probably the best. Yes, it would be very helpful for the layman; and yes, it would give freshmen a real understanding of existentialism's essential ideas in a historical and interdisciplinary context.

But, for two reasons, I could also use it to provide background starting points for discussion in a graduate seminar---even if there was only one copy kept on the table. First, Aho repeatedly offers brief quotes and their sources when he introduces new personalities and facets---so we know exactly where he is coming from and his sources---and we can decide whether we agree or not out of our own background and deeper reading. Second, and more importantly, he is always oriented---even when he is treating ambiguous subject matter. He ties everything back to existentialism's essential idea of the concepts of freedom and anxiety as these ideas are having a widespread---but often unrecognized because they are so much a part of us---continuing impact in the modern world.

There are so many places where one can jump in and move to the essence of things---even for those who wholly, but often intuitively, disagree with what existentialism has brought into modern thinking. There is enough clarification to give one's opposition a real starting point---and from more than one place too.

Accessible, excellent introductory text.
By Mon D
As a casual philosophy reader, this was an excellent introductory book. Dr. Aho does a wonderful job of explaining difficult concepts in a very accessible way, and offering multiple viewpoints on the same topics from various key existentialist thinkers. I particularly liked his frequent literary and contemporary references, from Camus to Yalom, and his efforts to connect existentialist ideas to modern day careers, such as in healthcare.

No Medium (MIT Press), by Craig Dworkin

In No Medium, Craig Dworkin looks at works that are blank, erased, clear, or silent, writing critically and substantively about works for which there would seem to be not only nothing to see but nothing to say. Examined closely, these ostensibly contentless works of art, literature, and music point to a new understanding of media and the limits of the artistic object. Dworkin considers works predicated on blank sheets of paper, from a fictional collection of poems in Jean Cocteau's Orphe to the actual publication of a ream of typing paper as a book of poetry; he compares Robert Rauschenberg's Erased De Kooning Drawing to the artist Nick Thurston's erased copy of Maurice Blanchot's The Space of Literature (in which only Thurston's marginalia were visible); and he scrutinizes the sexual politics of photographic representation and the implications of obscured or obliterated subjects of photographs. Reexamining the famous case of John Cage's 4'33", Dworkin links Cage's composition to Rauschenberg's White Paintings, Ken Friedman's Zen for Record (and Nam June Paik's Zen for Film), and other works, offering also a "guide to further listening" that surveys more than 100 scores and recordings of "silent" music. Dworkin argues that we should understand media not as blank, base things but as social events, and that there is no medium, understood in isolation, but only and always a plurality of media: interpretive activities taking place in socially inscribed space.

Review

Craig Dworkin's social formalist commentaries and compendia are among the most telling works of criticism in our time. Both provocative and mesmerizing, Dworkin's detailed readings of forms, structures, and bibliographic codes (rather than themes and subject matter), with special attention to potentially unnoticed discrepancies, elucidates the warp and woof of a series of hard-core and uncanny art practices in which the 'remove of literature' (erasure of signal, voiding of medium, foregrounding of paratext) opens the floodgates of a sublimely nude poetics of blank: the noise of silence.

(Charles Bernstein, Donald T. Regan Professor of English and Comparative Literature, University of Pennsylvania; author of Attack of the Difficult Poems: Essays and Inventions)

Like Wallace Stevens' snow man, who parses 'nothing that is not there and the nothing that is,' Craig Dworkin faces up to this exquisite challenge, following the lead of an old Provenal lyric 'to make a poetry of pure nothing.' With a mental agility commensurate with every unlikelihood it encounters, Dworkin is a connoisseur of details even where none would seem to exist. His keen eye (and ear) for the materiality behind non-appearance is a marvel: he is the Barnum of a peculiar new circus called No Medium.

(Jed Rasula, Helen S. Lanier Distinguished Professor of English, University of Georgia, author of Modernism and Poetic Inspiration: The Shadow Mouth)

When Craig Dworkin's Reading the Illegible appeared in 2003 it immediately became a seminal contribution to poetic discourse, one that I would read alongside Charles Olson's Call Me Ishmael, Susan Howe's My Emily Dickinson, Charles Bernstein's Content's Dream, and Jerome McGann's Black Riders. I've been looking forward to reading his next book ever since, and here it is, No Medium. No poet-critic today is writing with as much immediacy, economy, precision, and vitality as Craig Dworkin. And no one writes a more inspiring endnote -- don't skip 'em!

(Kyle Schlesinger, Assistant Professor of Publishing, University of Houston-Victoria)

No Medium is not only an admirable feat of painstaking research that puts into conversation an impressive range of artworks, both famous and obscure, but also a testament to the fact that for the industrious critic encountering an apparent absence there is always something interesting to say.

(Michael Leong Hyperallergic)

Dworkin's study of apparent anomalies that turn out to be representative exemplars rather than quirky curiosities is well worth attention.

(Johanna Drucker Los Angeles Review of Books)

Precise
By Jack Galmitz
Simply the single-most important book of cultural criticism to appear in the last decades, No Medium is a must for artists of all persuasions. Professor Dworkin is at home in discussing all the arts and has mastered European avant garde theory and resolved it into a language of his own. Every critic and artist should own a copy.

a must read for the readers of art on the edge
By Amazon Customer
Writing about nothing , whether it be the
absence of an image in art, text in literature or sound in music is a daunting task and not one for the faint hearted, Craig Dworkin is up to the job in hand and has produced a thought provoking dissertation , with loads of references for those with energy to follow up.
