About the Author

Professor Laurence Alison is Co-director of the Centre for Critical Incident Research, University of Liverpool where he also holds a Chair in forensic psychology. He is a Chartered Forensic Psychologist, conducts research on investigative decision-making and leadership and has contributed to a number of major police enquiries as well as national police training programmes. His recent publications include (as editor) The Forensic Psychologist's Casebook (Willan Publishing, 2005).

The intriguing premise of Gaiman's tale is that the gods of European yore, who came to North America with their immigrant believers, are squaring off for a rumble with new indigenous deities: "gods of credit card and freeway, of Internet and telephone, of radio and hospital and television, gods of plastic and of beeper and of neon." They all walk around in mufti, disguised as ordinary people, which causes no end of trouble for 32-year-old protagonist Shadow Moon, who can't turn around without bumping into a minor divinity. Released from prison the day after his beloved wife dies in a car accident, Shadow takes a job as emissary for Mr. Wednesday, avatar of the Norse god Grimnir, unaware that his boss's recruiting trip across the American heartland will subject him to repeat visits from the reanimated corpse of his dead wife and brutal roughing up by the goons of Wednesday's adversary, Mr. World. At last Shadow must reevaluate his own deeply held beliefs in order to determine his crucial role in the final showdown. Soon Shadow discovers this road trip involves the upcoming epic battle between the old gods of the immigrants and today's new gods credit cards, TV, and the Internet. He also experiences repeat visits from the reanimated corpse of his dead wife, Laura. Shadow's personal tale and the details of American small-town life are well developed compared with the not-well-defined plot. The focus shifts from the gods' Armageddon to Shadow's life, to subplots about secondary characters. The book has wit but is too busy and not very engaging and includes some graphic language, sex, and disturbing events. George Guidall's clear, well-articulated narration contributes to a positive listening experience. Fans will no doubt enjoy the subject matter and the mythic scope. Denise A. Sad I discovered it so late

This is one of the more creative, imaginative, and unusual books I've read in a long, long time. Sad I discovered it so late; it's truly a remarkable read. A long book, yet reads like a summer novel. Go ahead, dive into Gaiman's wild imagination. Be prepared for unexpected twists, turns, and delightful weirdness. A classic.

A Classic Fairytale

I have read several of Neil Gaiman's novels and I think I enjoy this book and Neverwhere the most.

In every review I have made of his novels I comment on the amazing worlds that he is able to vividly birth with his writing. Nowhere, perhaps with American Gods as the only exception, is this more apparent than in Stardust.

The fantastical creatures and events that are depicted in this book, are truly a pleasure to behold. The way the story is narrated in particular, makes the reader feel as if events are being guided by some higher power like fate, though it's obviously the author, and this lends itself greatly to the classical fantasy feel of the book.

Its also interesting to note that this struck me as being one of the lighter fantasy worlds that Gaiman has crafted. I quite enjoyed this when juxtaposed to the London Underground of Neverwhere.

I greatly enjoyed this book and its call back to the classic fairy tales of days past. I can't help but wish there was more.

A mythical road trip through a Faulkner-like America

I didn't read the book when it came out so I just ended up buying the 10th anniversary edition. The story is great. I read it slowly, savoring each subplot (and there are lots of them). I'm a big Neil Gaiman fan and besides Neverwhere, this is now my other favorite book of his. This edition also contains tons of extra stuff, an interview with him, an additional foreword by him, an excerpt to another Neil Gaiman novel, and a book club discussion section. Read it, you won't be disappointed.

To better understand this unruly new force in the political world, the authors use experiments that test how social media influence citizens deciding whether or not to participate. They show how different personality types react to social influences and identify which types of people are willing to participate at an early stage in a mobilization when there are few supporters or signals of viability. The authors argue that pluralism is the model of democracy that is emerging in the social media age--not the ordered, organized vision of early pluralists, but a chaotic, turbulent form of politics.

This book demonstrates how data science and experimentation with social data can provide a methodological toolkit for understanding, shaping, and perhaps even predicting the outcomes of this democratic turbulence.

chaotic pluralism

A very thought-provoking survey of new forms of low-cost collective action. The graceful collaboration of four authors with complementary backgrounds has produced a page-turning book. As they present internet-based collective action, it involves boundless scope of participants and absence of parties or organizations, which produces “chaotic pluralism”. It’s not yet clear how much more (or less) successful these new forms are in comparison with more traditional forms of participation outside internet. But any further study on the matter will have to start from this one.
