Movie/list buffs will love!

In recent years, I've discovered it's becoming more difficult to find a suitable Christmas gift for my picky sister. Typically, I ask for a list and will purchase a couple items off of it but this year I'm changing it up. I've decided to find something she'd enjoy and appreciate but that she hasn't asked for or thought of. Luckily, I've came across the Listography series and had to check this book out. After viewing the first few pages provided on Amazon, I bought it. Now that I have it in hand, I know she'll love it! My sister and I are also big "list" people so that should be another plus (I didn't purchase the Music Listography book for myself, heh). I definitely recommend this item for any list and/or movie buff. My dad even flipped through it, perhaps I should get him one too (especially since my mom claims my sister and I get our list-making urges from him, heh). Totally worth the money, a great deal!

Interesting Lists, but a Little Repetitious

I loved the regular Listography book and plan to buy one and fill it out every 10 years to see how my answers change, so when I (a former film student) heard about the Film Listography book, I had to get it. There are a multitude of good questions, but overall I did not feel that this book was as amazing as the original. Some questions were a little repetitious in nature (i.e. List your favorite movies from the 60's, list your favorite movies from the 70's, etc.). I found myself spending an hour looking up release dates of films. Also, unless you have a gigantic index of films in your head, many of your lists will be very repetitious. It was certainly nice to do to kill some time, but it was not as introspective and creative as the original Listography.

Love these Listography books!

My husband and I love the Music Listography and were so excited to learn that a Film version was coming out! We love it! Of course there are questions that are less applicable to us (32 & 35 yrs old), i.e., favorite movies from 40s, but we love these books! I especially love the cool illustrations.

Fantastic Survey of Key Studies

This book is so useful! It succinctly and clearly summarizes the most significant clinical trials in medicine. It's well-written, easy to navigate, and very compelling. It's indispensable to any student of medicine. It would also be a fascinating read to anyone interested in how clinical trials provide the foundation for modern internal medicine. A MUST Have Book For Anyone in High Level Plant Science/Biochemistry

This book is fantastic. I have taken several graduate level plant physiology and biochemistry courses and this book was a great reference for all of them. I have had other basic biochem courses that had textbooks that were very difficult to read and understand but this book is extremely well written and easy to understand even if biochemistry is not your main area of study.

The one down side is that this book is a little dated now at about 10 years old now but it is still very relevant and I have not found another book that comes close to being as comprehensive as this book. In research, a book quickly becomes outdated anyway since new discoveries are made all the time but you should still have a good reference book to fall back to for a lot of the basics and that's what this book does.

I have heard the authors are working on a new edition eventually. I fully intend to get a new edition of this book if one is ever released since this one has been so helpful and beneficial to have.

i like the book, it was written for graduate in plant biology, molecular biology and biochemistry directions, and the editor-in-cheif is very famous scientists.

Being that I just took Urban Sociology this semester I thought it would be best to go ahead and give my two cents on the text book. "Discovering Cities" isn't a bad text book, but then it isn't the single greatest text book either. It does focus on the basics of Urban Sociology, but there are portions that seems to just skim over. I was lucky enough to have a wonderful professor for the class who seemed to know the material well enough that she was able to provide insight where the book fell short. Still, for a run of the mill text book it's not bad. I would have preferred for it to go deeper into the culture and subcultures of the Urban setting, but then again "we can't always get what we want."

Do I recommend it? Sure if your course is using the book get it, but do I recommend it for a private collection? No, you would be far better off doing research on the Chicago School and going from there.

Loved the book. I took an Urban Sociology class last semester & we used this book because my professor was Mark Hutter, the author. Love him & the book so much that I'm taking him again now. Such a cool guy, he's absolutely passionate about what he does & I think it shows in this book as well. I may be biased because I know the man himself but it's an easier read than most textbooks. It flows well & the tone in which it's written made it feel personal & kept my attention.

Most of America has no goals and dreams and for those people, they are content to keep people who do have them down to their level with hardship, criticism, and vilification. This book tells the stories of those who have suffered this way, been through terrible loss, and come through the other side with pure determination and faith in themselves, their God, and/or whatever/whoever else they did to get them through. Sometimes, it's enough to recognize the struggles we go through are simply not the first time its ever happened.

The future of the United Kingdom is an increasingly open question. This book traces the issue's roots to the Middle Ages, when English power and control came to extend to the whole of the British Isles. By 1300 it looked as if Edward I was in control of virtually the whole of the British Isles. Ireland, Scotland, and Wales had, in different degrees, been subjugated to his authority; contemporaries were even comparing him to King Arthur. This was the culmination of a remarkable English advance into the outer zones of the British Isles in the twelfth and thirteenth centuries. The advance was not only a matter of military power, political control, and governmental and legal institutions; it also involved extensive colonization and the absorption of these outer zones into the economic and cultural orbit of an England-dominated world. What remained to be seen was how stable (especially in Scotland and Ireland) this English 'empire' would be; how far the northern and western parts of the British Isles could be absorbed in an English-centered polity and society; and to what extent the early and self-confident development of English identity would determine the relationships between England and the rest of the British Isles. The answers to those questions would be shaped by the past of the country that was England; the answers would also cast their shadow over the future of the British Isles for centuries to come.

A former President of the Royal Historical Society, R. R. Davies is Chichele Professor of Medieval History at All Souls College, Oxford, and Chairman of the Modern History Faculty, University of Oxford. His books include The Revolt of Owain Glyn Dwr, Domination and Conquest: The Experience of Ireland, Scotland, and Wales 1100-1300, and Conquest, Coexistence, and Change: Wales 1063-1415.

Davies continues his excellence in scholarship and fresh perspective on the interaction of Norman/"English" influences on the existing cultures of the British Isles during the immediate two centuries following the invasion. It elegantly reflects that this process of "integration" of Wales, Ireland and Scotland was not natural or inevitable and could only be accomplished by force - or a forceful ruler (Henry I, Henry II. Edward I). In fact, the process of integration may have fostered the development of cultural unity that could only be overcome by force. It sheds an exceptional light on the question of "natural" British unity. As with all of Davies works, his writing style can hold the reader's attention while still being well-documented in facts.

Great gift for an upcoming military leader

Purchased as a gift to one of my ROTC Cadets to begin their professional library. As part of a class assignment I asked each cadet what book would they no-kidding read, military or not, related to their academic major or not. After I compiled the list of books for the class I went online and ordered all the books from Amazon. I placed them at their seats prior to class and allowed them to enter the room w/o me being present for the first five minutes. It was, and still is, one of the good teaching moments of our time together. Thanks for helping me fulfill a need in their soon-to-be military career.

Tells it like it is

Doctor's are human. They make mistakes. It's hard when it happens to you. Lawsuits are ruining medicine. They are actually very few poorly trained doctors out there. Gawande does a great job in telling it like it is as far as doctors making mistakes. I think more doctors would be honest about their mistakes if they weren't so afraid of being sued. Most people just want to know that the doctor did his or her best. Young doctors need to be trained, and they must train on real people for most procedures. That's how they get better. I love Gawande's writing style, and have several of his books.

I have read all 4 of this author/doctors books. What a wonderful writer he is, as well as a doctor who seeks the truth! Love it, love him and more. I am anxious for him to write another, although it seems he has already covered everything! My friend, a nurse, said this was too frightening for the common reader, I didn't think so, as I want to know! Such interesting material he choses, and how he researches it all! Just fantastic!
