The Best Novel of 2015 -- Hands Down!

From the first page, you will be swept away by this stunning portrayal of a marriage in crisis. Like a spark that grows into a conflagration, Jess's unease about her husband Chet's behavior and words flares into flames of pain and shock as she forces herself to admit the unthinkable.

In the midst of this turmoil, Haley, their teenage daughter, is also fighting to understand herself and her place in her family and the world. Upon learning of her father's selfish betrayals, she runs away and into grave danger. Both mother and daughter abhor conflict and can't find the inner strength to stand up and speak out for what they need and the outrage they feel. But the time has come to stand and face the fire.

Jessica is so much like many women. She loves Chet. She honors her marriage and family. She doesn't want to rock the boat. But what do you do when your boat's been capsized? Jessica has tough decisions to make that will impact not only her but her daughter.

This novel is beautiful. Set in the Yosemite area, the story has layers of symbolism and metaphor. California is on fire, and while fire destroys, it also burns the underbrush to ash so that new life can sprout. Ginny Yttrup parallels the outer and interior dangers--dangers of being scorched and burned. Her characters are thrown into the crucible and face a fire that might destroy them as the landscape around them burns.

If you read only one novel this season, make it Flames.You won't avoid being scorched yourself, but you will be glad for it. There is victory and healing at the end of the journey.

Ginny Yttrup’s latest novel, Flames, deals with a tender subject, the complexities of life – seen from multiple angles and multiples generations, as the flames of infidelity burn through a family. Jessica Weaver is a fire archaeologist who preserves the effects of wildfire on all areas of life. When infidelity blazes through her family, she is forced to take a close look at the motivations of her own life choices and examine the steps that brought her to this defining moment.

The desire to preserve her family unscathed is thwarted when her teenage daughter, Haley, also discovers her father’s infidelity. She chooses to run from the problem, creating another layer of firestorm that overlies the circumstances facing her parents.

While Haley flees to the wilderness, Jessica flees to her father, and Ted, becomes the lens through which we view the perspective of the parent who shepherds and supports his daughter through a trial not unlike one he walked through in his own marriage decades earlier. The faith and grace displayed through Ted and his wife Cretia, is a poignant reflection of God’s grace and mercy to His children no matter what trial they are facing.

This is Ginny Yttrup’s first self-published novel, and it was written from a heart’s desire to help people take a long hard look at the destructive consequences of careless choices. But, more than that, it is a novel that walks through the scorched earth of the heart and finds hope and healing through the searing flames of infidelity.

The words are rich, and carefully woven together so the reader is able to feel the pain, the terror, the hopelessness and the strength that is born out of such a trial. I’ve walked this journey in my own life, and I’ll confess there were times I just snot-sobbed over my book and had to lay it down and physically grieve through the pain of my own life circumstances. But, once on the other side of this novel, I felt stronger and more purposeful about my future than I’ve felt in years! SUCH HEALING was found in the pages of this novel for me!! This is a story birthed in love, and I am certain many lives will be saved and changed through reading this novel!

Good Story, but Frustrating to Read

"Flames" by Ginny L. Ytrrup

Okay, I confess, ...I've liked Ginny Ytrrup ever since I read "Words". I became a huge fan and devoured her novels as soon as I could. I enjoyed "Invisible", too, but not as much as "Words". Still.... For all that devotion, you'll notice that I only gave this novel 4-stars. I had thoughts of rating it only 3-stars. Why?

Ginny Ytrrup seems to be hung up on writing in the first-person. And worse, she has several characters narrating their own parts of the story. Several characters, writing in the first-person, in various parts of the story, makes the story difficult for an easy, enjoyable experience. A first-person account, from only one perspective, is okay, though I'm not a big fan. But from three or more characters? Yes, I followed the story, but it was frustrating. Because of the switch of which-person-narrative, the story didn't flow well as it should have.

"Flames" ultimately was a good, entertaining novel. But while reading it, there was a underlying frustration, a nagging feeling, that I did not overly enjoy. If you can read first-person narratives, from several differing points of view, you might enjoy it. I hope you do. I want the author to be encouraged to continue to write. But I also hope she reads this review and understands my objections to the narrative style.

BGP Clearly defined

From reading this book you can see that the author has brought to the table a clear explaination of BGP. I for the longest time have tried to find a book to turn people on to when they tell me they want to learn more about the subject. This book defines from top to bottom a great fundimental understanding about the protocol. I recommend this if you would like to learn more about BGP or if you need to implement it.

Excellent Introduction to BGP

The Border Gateway Protocol is a critical part of the Internet. Its operation is also completely invisible to almost everyone on the Internet. Only ISPs and companies with high bandwidth or reliability requirements. So unless you work in such an environment or want to their may not be anything of immediate interest for you in it. The subject is still interesting however.

The author starts the book off with a gentle introduction to multi-homing and why you would need or want to run BGP on your router. Someone without any experience with basic IP networking
concepts or Cisco experience will probably be lost very quickly. There is an appendix that describes the basics of Cisco configuration. The book only covers Cisco routers, which are the routers most companies are using anyway.
The book continues with some excellent tutorials on how to use BGP in your network. There are a lot of detailed explanations of all the components that make up BGP both from the perspective of a network that wants to use BGP and from the perspective of an ISP. There are even a lot of examples of the way an ISP handles more political issues like peering with other ISPs and there is an entire chapter on dealing with the day-to-day issues on your network.

Overall, this is an excellent guide to using and configuring BGP. The only thing lacking was an accompanying CD with the book. Since many of these complex protocols require practice, so some sort of simulator would have really completed the package.

With this book - learning BGP has never been easier

For the last year or two I have been searching for a book that would allow me to understand the fundamentals as well as the advanced concepts in BGP. For the last year or two I have grown frustrated with the books from Cisco Press - either the writing would just put your lights out or that there is overwhelming amount of information on packets that would distract if not deter you from trying to focus on learning the protocol. Then this book came along and the author has done an outstanding job in organizing and presenting the materials that would surely keep the junior to senior level network guys interested and best of all the author clearly knows how to explain the BGP concepts in an easier to understand manner. I highly recommend this book for junior to senior network guys who have the desire to learn BGP. Learning BGP has never been easier with this book.

About the Author
Giorgio Buttazzo is Full Professor of Computer Engineering at the Scuola Superiore Sant'Anna of Pisa. He graduated in Electronic Engineering at the University of Pisa in 1985, received a Master in Computer Science at the University of Pennsylvania in 1987, and a Ph.D. in Computer Engineering at the Scuola Superiore Sant'Anna of Pisa in 1991. From 1987 to 1988, he worked on active perception and real-time control at the G.R.A.S.P. Laboratory of the University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia. From 1991 to 1998, he held a position of Assistant Professor at the Scuola Superiore Sant'Anna of Pisa, where he founded and coordinated the RETIS Laboratory on real-time systems. From 1998 to 2005, he held a position of Associate Professor at the University of Pavia, where he directed the robotics laboratory of the Computer Science department. His main research interests include real-time operating systems, dynamic scheduling algorithms, quality of service control, multimedia systems, advanced robotics applications, and neural networks.

Provides practical hard RT techniques based on theory.

Highly recommended. This is the book that I loan to software engineers, computer science new grads (and sometimes not so new grads), that don't understand what hard real-time is, don't understand that it matters, and most importantly, don't understand that real-time performance can be predicted by the appropriate choice of a scheduling policy. By understanding the concepts in this book, the real-time system architect is provided a variety of techniques that can be used to design a system whose timing performance can be analyzed, predicted and guaranteed by proof.
The author presents algorithms to implement aperiodic and periodic task scheduling, fixed- and dynamic-priority servers, resource access policies. He gives practical examples of their application, discusses their drawbacks, and compares them as a function of performance, complexity, memory requirements, etc.. In general the author presents an algorithm by first giving a practical explanation of how the algorithm works, follows this with a schedulability analysis and guarantee of schedulability. Theorems with proofs are introduced as necessary when they are needed as part of the analysis. This is a practical book whose content is based on theoretical foundations. Published references for all algorithms are provided.

Academic value but impractical for implementation

Those of us who have been developing dedicated real-time applications need a text to teach less experienced engineers how to decompose real-time problems for effective implementation. This is not that text.

The book is well written. But the author is obsessed with scheduling algorithms and methods for estimating their execution times. This is essentially useless for two reasons: (1) the actual execution times are best controlled by effective application decomposition and (2) real-time applications are nearly always unfinished works; they usually under go numerous enhancements and revisions until they are no longer used at all. As any implementation is revised all the timing considerations must be reworked; we do not have time in the schedule nor money to afford this.

The author gives only scant consideration to determining when to poll for I/O or to use interrupt handlers and driver tasks; he offers no advice for making such determinations. The author does mention semaphores but does not discuss the numerous types of semaphores nor does he consider when/how one should use which kind of semaphore or what alternatives are available. There are similar deficiencies in the consideration of messaging, signals, events, timers, but only scheduling is considered. All of these constructs and their proper/improper use have profound influence on the efficiency of the algorithms implemented.

If you already have determined the "best" application decomposition and you already know how to use the various real-time methods to implement that decomposition and you will not add enhancements in the future and you have verified that your implementation will serve its purpose apart from timing considerations and you have lots of time in your schedule and plenty of money, why then you may investigate algorithm timing.

Still, it is a beautifully written book and a pleasure to read.

My Favorite for RTS

POINT OF VIEW

My point of view to use books about real-time systems is teaching: basic courses for bachelor and more advanced for master programs.The bachelor students have usually no knowledge about real-time systems, the programming skills are weak or moderate. In the master courses you have a variety between those who still have no knowledge (because master programs have students from different kinds of bachelor courses) and those who have done at least one basic course. Nearly all have had some industrial experience with software systems, but very rarely with real-time systems programming. With regard to the field of real-time systems you have also a very brought field of requirements: some companies are demanding for students which are skilled to program real pieces of hardware directly; others are using existing real-time operating systems which are the interface for programming. Still others have modeling tools which require the students to elaborate everything in formal models which then will be fed into simulators testing real hardware components. Fact is that the variety of concrete systems for real-time programming is enormous and to cope with only some of them is during a normal real-time system courses seldom manageable. Furthermore I have often experienced students which have done some programming of real hardware without a real understanding of the general concepts; the system worked but they were not able to argue about there system. Thus I developed through the last years the concept, that the students have to learn general concepts about real-time systems which they in parallel have to simulate by own programs. Besides this they can then either opt for more theory or for more concrete systems experience. With this background I have my opinions about some books about real-time systems.

SOME OTHER OPTIONS THAN BUTAZZO
===============================

A book which I think is good for an understanding of object-oriented programming but nearly not for real-time systems is Ellis, Objectifying Real-Time Systems,1994. Then there are some books written from practitioners of the field like
KLEIN et al., A Practitioner's Handbook for Real-Time Analysis, 1993; Liu, Real-Time Systems, 2000; Z�bel,Echtzeitsysteme. Grundlagen der Planung, 2008. They are very rich with details, but I am missing there a clear structure bringing forward the the theoretical core of real-time systems. Similar to these books but with some differences is Laplante, REAL-TIME SYSTEMS DESIGN AND ANALYSIS, 2004. The remarkable point of this book is that he explains largely and in detail the overall engineering process within which real-time systems development has to be placed. Besides this Laplante is touching most fields of real-time systems but often only at the 'surface'. More theoretical minded with a broad scope is KOPETZ, Real-Time Systems. Design Principles for Distributed Embedded Applications, 1997, 5th ed. 2001. But although it is written from a theoretical point of view it is written in plain text, without formulas, algorithms and proofs. Thus you can use it only as a worthful pointer to important topics. clearly theoretical minded stressing scheduling theory is COTTET et al., Scheduling in Real-Time Systems, 2002. This book is for me nearly like the book of Butazzo. Some others perhaps will give them there preference.

WHAT COUNTS FOR
================

What the book of Butazzo clearly has is a very clear structure, a systematic account, presenting the main points, giving all references to important papers, giving at least the main lines of proofs, but nevertheless the chapters are short and not overloaded with confusing details.

WHAT IT CAN NOT
================
This is not a book explaining the real programming of real systems. This would be a special topic which --in my view-- has to be separated from an introduction into real-time systems theory.
And, besides all the good points with regard to the exposition of the theoretical points of real-time systems the book of Butazzo is not yet a complete theory of real-time systems. Looking to the variety of concrete systems it seems at the first glance impossible to write a 'complete' theory of real-time systems, but I think, this is not impossible. But Butazzo (and eventually Cottet et al.) can be a good starting point for this.

This book is about systems. It concentrates on the engineering of human-made systems and on systems analysis. In the first case, emphasis is ont he process of bringing systems into being, beginning with the identification of a need and extending through requirements determination, functional analysis and allocation, design synthesis and evaluation, validation, operation and support, and disposal. In the second case, focus is on the improvement of systems already in being. By employing the iterative process of analysis, evaluation, modification, and feedback most systems now in existence can be improved in their effectiveness, product quality, affordability, and stakeholder satisfaction.

Systems engineering may be defined and/or described as a technologically based interdisciplinary process for bringing systems, products, and structures (technical entities) into being. While the main focus is nominally on the entities themselves, systems engineering offers organizations a better strategy. Systems engineering is inherently oriented to considering "the end before the beginning" and concentrates on what the entities do before determining what the entities are.

Instead of offering systems or system elements and products per se, systems engineering focuses on designing, delivering, and sustaining functionality, a capability, or a solution. This strategic thinking is now being considered by forward-looking organizations in both the private and public sectors. It is applicable to most types of technical systems encompassing the domains of communication, defense, education, healthcare, manufacturing, transportation, and others. About the Author
Benjamin S. Blanchard served in the U.S. Air Force for several years during the Korean conflict; spent 17+ years in industry as a design engineer, field service engineer, and engineering manager (Boeing, Sanders Associates, Bendix, and General Dynamics); taught reliability and maintainability courses as an Adjunct Professor, Rochester Institute of Technology (1967-1969); employed at Virginia Tech as Director of Engineering Extension and Assistant Dean of Engineering for Public Service (1970-1997); Chaired Graduate Program in Systems Engineering, Virginia Tech (1979-1997); served as a Visiting Professor at the University of Exeter, UK, teaching logistics engineering courses (1989-1996); served as an Adjunct Professor, University of Virginia, teaching systems engineering (2001); taught courses in systems engineering and logistics engineering at Virginia Tech (1971-2004); served as Professor of Systems Engineering, Portland State University, and taught courses in systems and logistics engineering via the internet (1999-2004); and conducted training programs, seminars, and workshops in systems engineering, logistics, maintenance, and life-cycle costing in 34 different countries (1972-2002). In addition, he has authored and/or co-authored nine different books and a number of monographs, book chapters, and technical papers in systems engineering, logistics engineering, maintainability and maintenance, and life-cycle costing.

Wolter J. Fabrycky - Lawrence Professor Emeritus of Industrial and Systems Engineering at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, Registered Professional Engineer in both Arkansas and Virginia, and Chairman of Academic Applications International, Inc. Fabrycky taught at the University of Arkansas and then Oklahoma State University before becoming Founding Chairman of the Interdisciplinary Systems Engineering Graduate Program, Associate Dean of Engineering, and then Dean of Research, all at Virginia Tech. He is a Fellow in AAAS, ASEE, IIE, and INCOSE. An INCOSE Charter Member, Fabrycky was designated a SE Pioneer (with Ben Blanchard) in 2000. Fabrycky is Founder and President of Omega Alpha, the International Honor Society for Systems Engineering and President Elect of Alpha Pi Mu, the Industrial Engineering Honor Society. He serves or served on the National Boards of APM, ASEE, IIE, INCOSE, and OAA. Received the Distinguished Educator Award from IIE, the Grant and Wellington Awards from ASEE and IIE, and the Lohmann Medal from Oklahoma State. Fabrycky was named a member of the 1978 Engineering Education Delegation to the People's Republic of China, sponsored by the Committee on Scholarly Communication with the PRC. This was written by systems engineers? Really??

This book is laughably difficult to use in a course setting. The shortcomings in consideration for usability and extensibility to the classroom setting by the authors significantly undermine their credibility on the topic of systems engineering.

Strike 1 - The table of contents has no subtopics or any indications of what is in each chapter aside from a headline. For example "8 - Detail Design and Development". Say I want to review for a test, or find something quickly? Tough, read the whole chapter again.

Strike 2 - There are no indications of what chapter you're in on any given page. For example, I flip to randomly selected page 242, which has heading 7.4 for Profitability Evaluation. This is actually in chapter 8, which you can only determine by flipping backwards until you find the intro page, which still doesn't even have the chapter number!!!! You have to find it in small print on the bottom of the first page of the chapter. This book is insanely monotonous so its easy to lose your place or accidentally go too far if for instance your instructor notes "check chapter 11, Section 5.3".

Strike 3 - The index must have been an afterthought, as it hasn't included a single topic that I've wanted to review later. Want to brush up on how TPM's (Technical performance measures) are defined or used? Tough! Start flipping pages! I've tested numerous topics as I run across them in the text by flipping back to the index and laughing each time they are not there (e.g. SEMP (systems engineering management plan), PMP (program management plan), etc.).

Seriously do not but this book until they fix these glaringly obvious flaws. I've been trying to find a contact for the authors or the publisher to no avail. I fault my instructor for selecting this book, obviously he has not tried to use it.

Good for courses and intro

This book provides a good overview of the systems engineering discipline either as a academic subject or career-based.

Pros:
-Breaks down common model, approaches, and analysis
-Uses "real-life" examples and applies processes and analysis previously mentioned
-Does "build on" previous material

Cons:
-The examples are pretty closely linked, more variety would have been better for those outside certain industries
-Certain approaches are just glossed over
-Sometimes it's too "academic". Most SE is real-world and should be applicable to many fields/disciplines, whereas this book names it as a sole discipline

Beautifully written and incredibly helpful

I'm a designer who has always wished to be a better writer. I've read tons of blog posts, half-read academic-writerly books that made me feel like I wasn't paying enough attention in college, and purchased in earnest how-to's that serve mostly as dust curation tools for my shelf. Nothing has ever really stuck.

This is the first book on writing I've read that is practical, approachable, and project oriented. I was able to understand processes that make going about writing less intimidating and more clear. I think most importantly it's given me structured ways to approach what I write and think about what I'm communicating. Nicole and Kate have written a great book that is immensely helpful and fun to read. Thank you!

There needs to be more books like this.

This book is beautiful, clear and refreshing. One of the things I really appreciate is the small illustrations throughout the book that allow the mind to rest while absorbing their concepts. I appreciate the background of both of the authors and how one works freelance and so has exposure to lots of businesses, while the other works for MailChimp and understands working inside of a larger innovative company.

The web moves so fast that it's hard to keep up with the latest designs and best practices. From what I've seen, the majority of the most current best practices are in blog posts, and some are in books from A List Apart and Smashing Magazine - but there's not enough out there. I couldn't find any design books on flat web design updated for 2014, but scores of blog posts. What makes this book stand out is that it's current, written by professionals, concise and easy to grasp the concepts, and just beautiful through and through. I hope the authors continue to write and can inspire designers in their field to create books like this.
