Poor pictures

This book is quite an disappointment for me!
The pictures are black-white with mediocre quality,
and unable to cover some important developmental stages.
Not worthy to buy it.

A fine update and excellent reference and learning guide.

This second edition of Master Cassandra over comes the major complaint of the first edition as being out of date. It covers the latest versions of Cassandra and then some. All the first edition chapters have been updated, and CQL get a good introduction in the 3rd chapter now. This is my 3rd book on Cassandra and I have to say it is now my favorite as it has tons of internals information. It is well written and made many complex concepts very understandable for me. Glad to have in in my Library.

One spot I disagree with the author though is on swap. In his experience he may prefer the database system go down from the OS's Out-of-Memory(OOM) kill from lack of swap space instead of having sluggish performance. Many places I have worked, every outage counted against your SLA and could lead to huge fines. Sluggish is not always consider down or count against your SLA and on the fly adjustments might be possible to get it back to acceptable levels. Other then that I enjoyed the book.

From my perspective is the most advanced, complete &up-to-date reference about Cassandra with advanced topics such as clustering, tuning, monitoring and hadoop integration.

I like the way the book is organized: clear information, good samples and still with very advanced topics the authors did a good job explaning complex topics. It is a must to have if you are entering the new distributed database world & NOSQL ..

All work and no stilts put King Birtram's kingdom in danger

Theodore Seuss Geisel, using his famous pen name of Dr. Seuss, wrote and illustrated his first children's book, "And to Think That I Saw It On Mulberry Street," in 1937. Two years later he wrote "The King's Stilts." Even at this early point in his career Dr. Seuss was able to emphasize the idea that reading could be fun without have to be moralistic and that it was important that the illustrations actually had a close relationship with the text of the story. Geisel once declared: "I like nonsense, it wakes up the brain cells. Fantasy is a necessary ingredient in living, it's a way of looking at life through the wrong end of a telescope. Which is what I do, and that enables you to laugh at life's realities." Certainly "The King's Stilts" evidences that point.

The story begins with the point that King Birtram on the Kingdom of Binn NEVER wore his stilts during business hours and that he worked very hard, continuing to sign important papers of state even while he was taking a bath. However, the king's most important job was caring for the mighty Dike Trees that protected the people of Binn from the sea. Their heavy, knotted roots held back the water. However, those roots were also very tasty to Nizzards, a kind of giant blackbird with a sharp and pointed beak. If the Nizzards were to eat the roots of the Dike Trees then the roots would soon give way, the sea would pour in, and every last soul in the Kingdom of Binn would drown. But King Birtram did not allow this to happen and by gathering together a thousand of the largest and smartest cats in the world to function as Patrol Cats (wearing badges that say "P.C."). These cats were so important that the Cat Kitchen was bigger than that of the King and even had the best cooks in the land.

Every day from seven in the morning, when he watched the changing of the Cat Guard, to five in the afternoon, the King inspected every root of every Dike Tree in the kingdom. Only after that important task was finished each day would King Bitram hurry back to his castle to get his red stilts and start racing through his marble halls and garden stairs. The people thought it looked strange, but they knew the king worked hard and well as his job and if he wanted to have a bit of fun then he should be allowed to do whatever he wanted to do. Unfortunately Lord Droon was the one person in Binn who did not like fun and who sulked long enough that the decided to steal the King's stilts, which is when things start to go bad for both King Birtram and his people.

What makes this an interesting book is that, as is usually the case, Dr. Seuss is telling a story that imparts lessons to both young readers and older readers alike. If anything it is the latter that are the target audience for this story, since we see that being able to play is as important as hard work. As long as someone works long and hard they deserve to do what ever their heart desires when it comes to having fun. Meanwhile, younger readers would be getting the opposite lesson, learning that being able to have fun as an adult is dependent upon earning your enjoyment (which makes it clear that "The King's Stilts" is really more for adults).

I was actually surprised that "The King's Stilts" was written in 1939, because if I were trying to guess at what inspired Dr. Seuss to tell this particular story it would have been the concern in the press about President Dwight D. Eisenhower playing golf so often (I thought King Birtram looked a bit like Ike). But evidently Dr. Seuss was going for a more universal idea here. Meanwhile there is the entire subtext of how a kingdom might be lost because of a pair of stilts the same way as the old story about the battle lost for the want of a nail, which only serves to prove that with the good doctor there are always multiple levels to the story and its lessons.

Movie/list buffs will love!

In recent years, I've discovered it's becoming more difficult to find a suitable Christmas gift for my picky sister. Typically, I ask for a list and will purchase a couple items off of it but this year I'm changing it up. I've decided to find something she'd enjoy and appreciate but that she hasn't asked for or thought of. Luckily, I've came across the Listography series and had to check this book out. After viewing the first few pages provided on Amazon, I bought it. Now that I have it in hand, I know she'll love it! My sister and I are also big "list" people so that should be another plus (I didn't purchase the Music Listography book for myself, heh). I definitely recommend this item for any list and/or movie buff. My dad even flipped through it, perhaps I should get him one too (especially since my mom claims my sister and I get our list-making urges from him, heh). Totally worth the money, a great deal!

Interesting Lists, but a Little Repetitious

I loved the regular Listography book and plan to buy one and fill it out every 10 years to see how my answers change, so when I (a former film student) heard about the Film Listography book, I had to get it. There are a multitude of good questions, but overall I did not feel that this book was as amazing as the original. Some questions were a little repetitious in nature (i.e. List your favorite movies from the 60's, list your favorite movies from the 70's, etc.). I found myself spending an hour looking up release dates of films. Also, unless you have a gigantic index of films in your head, many of your lists will be very repetitious. It was certainly nice to do to kill some time, but it was not as introspective and creative as the original Listography.

My husband and I love the Music Listography and were so excited to learn that a Film version was coming out! We love it! Of course there are questions that are less applicable to us (32 & 35 yrs old), i.e., favorite movies from 40s, but we love these books! I especially love the cool illustrations.

This book is so useful! It succinctly and clearly summarizes the most significant clinical trials in medicine. It's well-written, easy to navigate, and very compelling. A MUST Have Book For Anyone in High Level Plant Science/Biochemistry

This book is fantastic. I have taken several graduate level plant physiology and biochemistry courses and this book was a great reference for all of them. I have had other basic biochem courses that had textbooks that were very difficult to read and understand but this book is extremely well written and easy to understand even if biochemistry is not your main area of study.

The one down side is that this book is a little dated now at about 10 years old now but it is still very relevant and I have not found another book that comes close to being as comprehensive as this book. In research, a book quickly becomes outdated anyway since new discoveries are made all the time but you should still have a good reference book to fall back to for a lot of the basics and that's what this book does.

I have heard the authors are working on a new edition eventually. I fully intend to get a new edition of this book if one is ever released since this one has been so helpful and beneficial to have.

Where to begin? "'Begin at the beginning," the King said gravely, "and go on till you come to the end: then stop." (Alice in Wonderland)

Being that I just took Urban Sociology this semester I thought it would be best to go ahead and give my two cents on the text book. "Discovering Cities" isn't a bad text book, but then it isn't the single greatest text book either. It does focus on the basics of Urban Sociology, but there are portions that seems to just skim over. I was lucky enough to have a wonderful professor for the class who seemed to know the material well enough that she was able to provide insight where the book fell short. Still, for a run of the mill text book it's not bad. I would have preferred for it to go deeper into the culture and subcultures of the Urban setting, but then again "we can't always get what we want."

Do I recommend it? Sure if your course is using the book get it, but do I recommend it for a private collection? No, you would be far better off doing research on the Chicago School and going from there.

Good book, great man.

Loved the book. I took an Urban Sociology class last semester & we used this book because my professor was Mark Hutter, the author. Love him & the book so much that I'm taking him again now. Such a cool guy, he's absolutely passionate about what he does & I think it shows in this book as well. I may be biased because I know the man himself but it's an easier read than most textbooks. It flows well & the tone in which it's written made it feel personal & kept my attention.
